Re: setantas - joe calzaghes competition
You could put together a similar list for RJJ and many top fighters.
Agreed, he should have fought better quality earlier, but that doesn't mean you can't give the guy any credit.

Re: setantas - joe calzaghes competition
i have given him credit...see other thread.....the names above are D OR E class fighters , dont even compare roy jones record ffs.
hopkins and toney were his first 2 big title wins...beats anything joe has done in his career.
if joe fights them at that stage its no wins for joe

marciano did this by fighting real fighters
joe will do this by fighting wbo bums and old men

Stop being a chump Bobby, I hate it when people think they can predict FANTASY match ups with such certainty. Who are you to say one would beat the other?boxerbob wrote:you think joe would beat a young hopkins and toney?????![]()

Who knows how Calzaghe would have done against those two, I've not really dedicated too much thought to it as it didn't happen. All I know is, Calzaghe has the skills, heart and the chin to have troubled all the above fighters.
Would have loved to have seen him fight those guys earlier in his career, and maybe you're right he'd have been handed his ass by all 3, but don't be telling me you know he would like it's a fact and you're some kind of boxing oracle.
Re: setantas - joe calzaghes competition
he will get respect if he fights....hopkins again , froch , dawson , kessler away from home
doubt we will see it though
probably fight the old guy who beat clinton woods and kayoed jones jnr...glen johnson
wax on - fighters are compared to each other , presnt day and days gone by...you really dont know this sport i think

Re: setantas - joe calzaghes competition
Nothing wrong with three of those opponents - Starie, Sheika and Veit. Calzaghe made Veit look terrible, but the undefeated 6'4" German was considered a very dangerous chellenger at the time. Sheika had loads of ambition then and was a handful for anyone, and Starie was excellent. He absolutely humiliated Clinton Woods. The other names in your list are pretty awful I grant you, but as the poster above said, no worse than the bums on Jones' record.
Re: setantas - joe calzaghes competition
Comparing fighters is one thing mate - INSISTING you're opinion is right and the other person knows nothing about boxing is another!! That's why we come on this forum I thought, to argue points not ram them down peoples throats.boxerbob wrote:he will get respect if he fights....hopkins again , froch , dawson , kessler away from home

You list of Joe's next fights isn't exactly one you'd expect from the boxing oracle that you are Bob.
1. Fight Kessler away?? Why?? Beat him convincingly already, no money in it.
2. Fight BHOP again. Beat him already. Awful fight, where he'd get no credit even if he beat him again.
3. Froch / Dawson - what have they done to deserve a shot and what money do they bring to the table?
Incase you haven't noticed Joe has got respect, he's #2 on most peoples P4P list. You argument about him not fighting the best soon enough is nothing new and what you've got to realise is that the fights against prime RJJ, Toney and BHOP have gone, yes they'll affect his legacy, but probably not as badly as a defeat to one or all of them. (look at what Pavlik being fed to BHOP has done to his reputation already).
Joe's matchmaking has always been smart and still is. It's all about the money for Joe now and who can blame him for that?

Marciano fought his fair share of shit and past there best big names, as you keep saying Hopkins was 43 well done thats correct the same 43 year old who handed Pavlik a boxing lesson, and as you like to fantasy match up boxers does that say that Calzaghe would automatically beat Pavlik ?? you also picked a few bums Calzaghe has fought how about a few top names and good prospects he fought
Mark Delaney- unbeaten prospect KO 5
Chris Eubank- proven world class fighter UD
Robin Reid- top level fighter SD
Omar Sheika- good level fighter beat Glen Johnson KO 5
Richie Woodhall- good level fighter
Byron Mitchell- former WBA champion KO 2
Jeff Lacy- mini Tyson apparently
Sakio Bika- very good level fighter UD
Mikkel Kessler- World class fighter UD
Bernard Hopkins- world class fighter SD
Jones Junior- still top 10 rated fighter UD
Boxerbob i think you have started to lose the plot in your last few posts

Froch is also unbeaten, and could be a super-middle champ. Plus it would be a big domestic fight.
Its better than fighting fighters 40+
Froch could be a world champ COULD BE is the key, if my auntie would have had balls she would of been my uncle, are you seriously saying a win over Froch who has fought nobody is better than a win over a 43 yr old Hopkins who just pasted Pavlik ?????

Thats just rubbish.
Anyway, i just think its better to fight up and coming fighters rather than had beens. Sure Hopkins beat Pavlik. But perhaps Pavlik can't fight at Light Heavy?
If Calzaghe didn't fight Kessler, then i dont think Kessler would have got the respect and fans he has now.
And Kessler fought quite well i thought.[/quote]
its not rubbish its a fact, he's beat prospects before and when he beats them is told they were never that good anyway, it's all a matter of opinion .

Ok i will give you that 1
Re: setantas - joe calzaghes competition
I'd actually like to see Joe fight Froch. Would be a brilliant domestic match up and if Carl did spring the suprise (which I wouldn't expect), then it would be almost like a passing on of the gauntlet in a similar way to Joe earning his spurs way back against Eubank.
Can't see it happening however. I think he'll fight one more time at Cardiff and then retire. Probably against another big name vet like Winky or Johnson.

Re: setantas - joe calzaghes competition
does anyone think that the names i have mentioned are world class???
if you do then you kow nothing about boxing
14 title defences vs nothing does not make you great
if eubank and benn had they opponents they would be undefeated for years too
calzaghe has not fought a great in his prime - why is that????
ps: will calzaghe be able to look in the mirror and say he fought the best....if he says yes then he is a liar
hatton went and fought mayweather
hamed went and fought barrera
benn went and fought mcclelland
eubank fought benn
lewis fought ruddock
mcguigan fought pedroza
want me to go on with british greats fighting real fighters who would test them???.....even haye went away to win his 1st world title.....stay at home joe didnt want to fly but found his wings when everyone got old
great -- never.....greats are tested...joe didnt want to be tested

Didn't Joe go away from home to fight a top 5 P4P fighter in Bernard Hopkins.boxerbob wrote:does anyone think that the names i have mentioned are world class???

Who is the great he should be fighting then? Carl Froch??
Calzaghe is a great fighter, arguably the best Britain has ever produced. Who should he have fought?
Ottke - stayed in Germany
Jones - already moved up to Light Heabyweight
Perhaps he could have fought a younger Hopkins but I doubt Hopkins would have fought him, he was off fighting the likes of De La Hoya for megabucks
Re: setantas - joe calzaghes competition
Hopkins did price himself out of a showdown a few years back
Re: setantas - joe calzaghes competition
It's not the names on the record (although there are a few light middles there). . . It's the fact that in 11 long years only 22 were fought.
Hatton made 16 defences of his WBU bauble.... in just 3 years.

Re: setantas - joe calzaghes competition
fornicate me, this forum is getting repetitive these days (thanks to the minority who make that possible!!
). Blah blah blah Hatton, blah blah Calzaghe, blah blah, not great, blah blah, In their prime, blah blah true champion, moan, moan, whinge, whinge, Old timers never had an easy fight, sob, sob sob.
Get over it.
Get over it.

Re: setantas - joe calzaghes competition
You can pull boxers records apart forever, fact is Calzaghe fought some absolute tosh throughout his career, same with Jones Jr, the only names that stand out on that record are Hopkins, Toney and McCallum, the rest are a mixture of decent fighters and complete wank. Hopkins spent his whole career fighting smaller guys until he fought Tarver.
Re: setantas - joe calzaghes competition
whatashambles you answered your own question.
yes he fought hopking away..but in his 11th year of being champion.
and why didnt he ed up to move up in weight to test himself vs jones??? because he would get beat......hatton moved up to fight mayweather for a superfight and will do it again to fight de la hoya
thats a guy that want to be tested
joe wanted easy wbo fights...jones was always there but joe wanted his 0 intact
ps: joe had 20 title defences in 10 years.....eubank had 20 in 5 years..big difference when he fought benn x2 , watson x2 , collins x2 , malinga , and rochigianni away from home...he then jumped 2 weight divisions to fight thomson x2...joe would neve do this
eubank is a great british fighter as he wanted to be tested....his names on his record easily beat calzaghes....and im not counting a very old jones and hopkins
johnson and tarver both kayoed jones....calzaghe was knocked down vs jones and couldnt knock an older shot version of him.
yeah calzaghe is great.....how many more facts do you want
