pernell whitaker vs floyd mayweather jnr at 135lbs

Post by boxerbob »

who wins and why????

battle of the 2 best defensive fights of the last 20 years.

both lightning quick but i fell whitakers better workrate but more importantly his very frequent jab wins this fight for sweet pea.

would love to see whitaker hand mayweather his ass in this fight , floyd can boast all he wants but whitaker was the best pure boxer of the 80-90s

116-112 to pernell sweet pea whitaker

One of the most boring fights in boxing history.....The safety first Mayweather and a safety first always off balance can't punch out of wet paper bag southpaw like Whitaker.

Just a horrible fight, as each poses in front of the other, and only wants to comb the others hair. :box:

It's a match-up done many times here, so you may or may not get a big response. I can't see what Mayweather did as a 135lber to compare him to Whitaker (whose best weight that was) in a straight-contest. Whitaker was the better man, IMO, & this weight in particular suits him.

A much more evenly-contested affair would be these two at Welter, where Mayweather regained some of his earlier authority. Whitaker built himself into a great 147lber, as well (look at the sturdiness of his legs). It'd be very close.

I'd favour Whitaker on a narrow decision at Welter, & a close-but-clear one at Light.

At LW I would take Sweet Pea by DEC .....in a good fight for the boxing purist....but a rather boring fight for the casual mass boxing fan....

I agree with G, I. Mayweather isn't even a top 5 Lightweight.

There are a lot of nuthuggers for both so I don't know who you mean but I think the obvious choice would be Whitaker in a easy decision victory.

No one touches the canvas.

Jokes asides, Whittaker at 135 would annoy Floyd big time. Pernell 8 rounds to 4.

It's Whitaker's far more unorthodox approach & strange actions in the ring which make him favourite as much as anything else, IMO. While Whitaker is obliged to figure out a faster & superb defensive fighter in Mayweather, Mayweather, for his part, has to do much the same thing, whilst also contending with a southpaw fighter who punches behind his back, ducks down to his knees, & spins his opposition around, patting them on the ass as he does so.

Whitaker probably wins at either weight, but Welter would be a struggle.

Exactly....Whitaker is one of the most over rated ever, ever, ever.........especially on this site.

The other southpaw around here that is way over rated is Hagler. But at least Hagler could bang.........Whitaker was a patsy powder puff queen in the punching department. :TU:

whitaker had a decent dig at 135 , he had the best jab ive seen since larry holmes and had the defensive moves to make mayweather look bad.

very technical fight but whitaker is better here

whitaker made chavez and nelson look like journeymen

floyds best win was against de la hoya...just

The great Pernell Whitaker wins this one. PBF was a great fighter, but not as near as the Sweet Pea.

This fight would be boring except for the names. Whitaker by decision. Floyd likes to counter punch and Whitaker would not be there for that. Two great fighters with styles that do not work against each other.
