Mutley out of O'Donnell clash?
i am hearing rumours this is off. Mutley has flu
fecking typical
last froch fight i really wanted fewkes murray and it was off
now the fight i was looking forward to most may be off
nottingham is cursed
i could phone Mutley's promoter but i'd rather not know till its confirmed
arse
i guess thats why they put lawton - gethin on the card?
if so, outstanding work by promoters/matchmakers to get a quality fight to replace mutley - o'donnell. a shame its happened if true but fair play to Hennesy/ PJ Rowson and the gethin/ lawton camps

:( I've been looking forward to seeing Mr Mutley back in action, it's been a long long while. More bad luck for Hennessy, but the Gethin-Lawton fight that they've lined up is an excellent replacement fight at short notice

Re: Mutley out of O'Donnell clash?
Triple feck. I was looking forward to this one almost as much as seeing Frochy.
Presumably Gethin-Lawton is an English title fight? It is a good replacement, Lawton should get the chance to look a lot better against Gethin than his terrible performance against Khan.
Should give Gethin the chance to grow into a bona fida challenger for Murray too.

Re: Mutley out of O'Donnell clash?
But whats the notice the fighters had for Lawton v Gethin. This bill having many pullouts.
Re: Mutley out of O'Donnell clash?
I have a feeling guys like Lawton and Gethin are always fit and near their fighting fights.
It's getting to the stage where boxers on the circuit start training anyway when a Hennessy Sports show is coming up, on the off chance that there is a series of withdrawals

I have it on pretty good authority that both gethin and lawton have known about this for a couple of weeksleforge wrote:But whats the notice the fighters had for Lawton v Gethin. This bill having many pullouts.
in any case like BUTCH says I know Gethin for one is never too far above his fighting weight. good pro that he is
Re: Mutley out of O'Donnell clash?
Walsall puncher Martin Gethin defends his English lightweight title against Stoke stylist Scott Lawton on the big Carl Froch world title bill in Nottingham on December 6.
Gethin is hot property following upset wins over John Fewkes and Nadeem Siddique in his last two fights - men who entered the fights with a combined record of 39-0. He stopped Sheffield fireball Fewkes in four rounds to win the English title in Nottingham in September and the flashy, switch-hitting Siddique in seven in Wigan before that. Good wins.
Now unbeaten in 16 fights (one draw), Gethin was said to be close to one with Bolton's comebacking Amir Khan on the same night in London but settles for a Khan victim instead, the neat-boxing Lawton, while Khan meets ageing and light-hitting Irishman Oisin Fagan. You have to wonder if the 25-year-old Gethin hit a little too hard on paper for the liking of Freddie Roach.
Anyway, to Lawton, who did take on Khan late last year in Nottingham and brought a huge crowd with him down the A50 from Stoke but failed to perform and was hammered in four one-sided rounds. Lawton barely landed a punch. He has since reeled off four wins, including a decision over Wolverhampton thumper Carl Allen, the man who held Gethin to that draw.
Lawton can box, and his movement and workrate are good, but lack of power is a real problem with him. Khan could afford to tee off on the 32-year-old and so could Jon Thaxton when he overwhelmed Lawton in seven rounds in a British title fight in March last year, although Thaxton is now the European lightweight champion. Gethin, conceding height and reach to the tall Potteries man, will also go a'hunting and will still have his eye on a crack at Khan, especially as Amir belted his elder brother Steve in three unpleasant rounds in Glasgow in 2005. The Bloxwich brickie must fancy his chances with anyone at the moment. He holds two wins over Allen, incidentally, the man who drew with him.
This won't be a walkover. Lawton runs his own gym and should build up an early lead with his fitness and better boxing, but in the end one fancies the harder-hitting Gethin to do the serious punching and the winning.

Re: Mutley out of O'Donnell clash?
i should probably make the note that the draw given to Allen vs Gethin in Dudley by Terry O'Connnor i think it was, was very flattering to Allen. As Podmore i think it was said at the time Allen's face was busted to pieces and he was pretty much blind for the weekend after the fight.
gethin's main problem might be his slow starting, which like you say bennie may give the neat Lawton chance for an early lead. But gethin is a real come to the boil fighter and I'd expect him to start taking control around the 4th

Re: Mutley out of O'Donnell clash?
Gethin's the man in top form, but IMO he's a step down from Khan and Thaxton and Lawton should feel a bit more comfortable in there this time and show he's capable at Enlish title level. Good fight.

Re: Mutley out of O'Donnell clash?
there was two welterweight eliminators.
o'donnell vs mutley and thompson vs doherty, both these fights have been cancelled as doherty has moved down a weight and mutley has pulled out of the fight.
will o'donnell vs thompson be a final eliminator?
thoughts

Re: Mutley out of O'Donnell clash?
Am I the only one that isn't too excited about Gethin? His last two wins on paper are exceptional but if you really think about it, he was losing for me when Siddique just ran out of gas and basically stopped himself, and in his fight with Fewkes he lost the first two rounds against an overweight, and uninterested Fewkes - didn't his corner pull him out because he didn't look arsed? He just seems to have got the right opponents at the right time, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Lawton outpoint him - I certainly can't see Khan, Murray or Thaxton having any trouble with him at all. But hey-ho, that's just my opinion on Martin Gethin.

Re: Mutley out of O'Donnell clash?
fingers crossed for Mutley - O'Donnell, a 'source close to mutley' hasn't heard anything about a pullout yet.
dioufy- i know what you mean about the Fewkes fight, as much as I am a fan of Gethin's i think on that night Fewkes was a 'name victory' for Martin rather than him beating a hungry on-form fighter in the ring.
however as i said at the time the reaction on here was lopsidedly opposed to giving any credit to Gethin where i thought some was due, IE being professional turning up in shape is part of the game and if you (Fewkes) can't do that, too bad.
tho w/r/t the Sidique fight i say this every time it comes up- so what if fighter x (Pavlik vs Taylor 1 Leonard vs Hearns 1, etc etc etc so many to list) was ahead on the cards? the beauty about boxing is that a stoppage win makes such equivocating talk unnecessary, IMO.
right opponents at the right time? certainly, although I think I rate Siddique a bit higher than some do.
sadly i think i also agree that he couldn't beat Thaxton/Murray. i think Murray's a slightly better version of Martin (stiffbacked pressure fighter) with a bit more snap in his shots, and Thaxton is IMO stronger/more muscular. and much much more experienced.
khan could fold under the kind of pressure gethin would give him though, IMO.

Re: Mutley out of O'Donnell clash?
Fair play to Gethin for turning up in shape and beating those two fighters - I just think things would've been different if Siddique wasn't out on his arse after seven rounds (I can only attribute that to poor conditioning) and if Fewkes gave a crap about the fight. All I am saying is that when he comes up against an in shape fighter who wants to win badly then he might struggle, and that's why I am picking Lawton to outpoint him. Because when Siddique and Fewkes wanted to they out-boxed Gethin for fun, and I can see Lawton doing that too. If Gethin comes away with a win, whether it be a knock-out or points win then I will be a little surprised.
Your prediction on the fight, mate? 97-93 in favour of Lawton for me.

Re: Mutley out of O'Donnell clash?
hmm. I am leaning towards Gethin by late stoppage. Lawton has skills but he ain't Sidique or Fewkes in speed terms IMO. Gethin may look like a cartoon lumbering mummy but he has a habit of closing the distance as the rounds progress. hmm thinking about it 2 men only have stopped Lawton and we've mentioned them above. feck it I'll stick with my biased pick 8)
i'll put the other side of sidique being out on his arse: he was tight at the weight, didn't like the pace that was set, and took solid bodyshots from Gethin too.

Re: Mutley out of O'Donnell clash?
btw come on dioufy 'when fewkes and sidique wanted to they outboxed him for fun'
I am sure they would have 'wanted' to do so for 10 whole rounds. so what happened? they just thought feck this I can't be bothered any more? maybe they had a memory lapse situation, "hmm, I am sure there was something i was supposed to be doing right now, ummm is eastenders on skyplus, check, did I turn my hair straighteners off before leaving, check, damn there is something at the back of my mind...
shit, eating that right hand reminds me, wasn't I supposed to be outboxing Martin Gethin for fun around now?" ;;-)
sometimes fighters are only as good as they are allowed maybe? and maybe the other bloke stops them douing what they want to do..?
edit: I guess only time will tell, but let's hope for a cracking fight and may the best dude win.
you have got me a bit worried now though![[icon_witsend.gif] :witzend:](./images/smilies/icon_witsend.gif)

Re: Mutley out of O'Donnell clash?
Perhaps I am doing Gethin a bit of a disservice, and maybe against Siddique his body-shots and pressure did take their toll on him, thus breaking Siddique down. But in the early rounds I think Siddique took the majority of them, and I don't really rate him, skills wise. It just seemed that Gethin was getting out-boxed quite easily up until Nadeem's fitness went (who doesn't have the highest of work-rate at 135lbs) - I guess Gethin's constant pressure got to him. Against Fewkes it was a different story - John's switch-hitting did bamboozle Martin and Fewkes did take both the first two rounds with relative ease, and then all of a sudden in the 3rd he didn't do anything and let Martin hit him, and therefore his corner pulled him out. Furthermore, it is my opinion that Siddique and Fewkes did out-box him up until Gethin's pressure got to the lazy Siddique and when Fewke's corner pulled him out for being disinterested. I expect Lawton to have good fitness, a will to win and a high work-rate, something of which Siddique and Fewkes never had against Gethin.
Listen, I may be wrong about Gethin and he may become a force and actually stop Lawton on the 6th. I have only seen Gethin's two fights against Siddique and Fewkes, whereas you have probably seen more. I expect you know more about him than I do.

you've probably seen him in as many fights at a decent level as I have mate, which is what matters really, Sidique was a biiiiig step up in class from all gethin's previous opponents, possibly barring the guy he stopped in Vegas.....

Can I ask how you would've seen Fewkes/Gethin going if the Fewkes that beat Watson had turned up?

i heard a rumour he was out. then a 'source close to mutley' denied it. I'm crossing my fingers he's okay to fight
