Joe has certainly mellowed since his early career - remember how he used to tell Jim Watt "What have you ever done so you can criticise me".... at the time Jim would have been ranked well above Joe in the British all time rankings.

On a side, but not unrelated to the thread topic.... lovely to read the piece about the sad, sad demise of Soleo Boxeo on Telefutura - I agreed with Farhood's comments. I get them sent to me weekly, and even though I haven't got a clue what they are saying - the commentators are almost like "friends".

Will be missed - hope it will return sometime.

I even love the Telefutura adverts - remind me of The fast show!

Telemundo boxing is fun also - the MC says "lady and gentman" he's good

Bunce column was an enjoyable read, although I cannot help but think in his pieces is all he really saying is "I can get a press pass and you cannot nah, nah, nah, nah, nah"

This fits with my only personal experience of Steve Bunce. Many years ago I had the misfortune of having a telephone conversation with him in which he insisted that I was not qualified to pass judgement on boxing matches because I only watched them on television. He said you needed a proper 3D perspective to see what was really going on. It so happened that at that stage of my life I was fortunate enough to get ringside tickets for several of the big matches, and I kept trying to mention this. He completely ignored my feeble attempts to have a conversation and continued with his grand thesis of how TV viewings were useless.

The point that I was never given the courtesy of making was that even after seeing a match up close, I still saw things I didn't notice from the different angles that television provided - so I would actually recommend both.

So he's always been tactless and lacking in class. Enzo Cal said the same thing with Colin Jones, i.e. what have you ever done to criticise us, you lost your big fights, you got beaten by Don Curry!...Well, Watt and Colin Jones didn't have the benefit of WBO titles and flattering matchmaking. Some of their British title fights were leagues above Joe's lengthy reign as WBO imposter.

Colin Jones was a stunning fighter. Look at how far he travelled to fight for the world title, winning the US fans over in the process. If he was around today he would be a British boxing superstar, why? He gave it 110%, laid people out and had skills.

Totally agree. I always felt Jones would have been even better with 15 rds. Brilliant fights with McCrory and seemed to take peak Curry's shots very well, making the Cobra work hard for his successes (until the scar tissue and Curry's surgical shots told, in 4). Very good fighter, but sadly a very slow starter and this prevented him from going to the very top. But a worthy, exciting career all the same.

Those fights with Kirkland Laing were great as well, what I've seen of them at least.

Never liked it when oft-cushioned modern fighters slag off good names from the past.
