Patterson BETTER than Ezzard Charles at heavy weight???theone wrote:Absolutely. Styles make fights as im sure you've heard. What troubled them about Walcott wouldn't pose the same type of problem to Patterson.ur totally underestimating walcott here. it took louis 26 rounds to put waloctt away, took marciano 13 yet patterson does it in 3?
First of all, any slick fast moving Heavy would have troubled Louis by the time Walcott fought him. They way he moved around the ring made Foreman look like Willie Pep in comparison.Yeah no shit...Floyd hit hard, but that was mostly due to his accuracy and speed. If Walcott could fight with bangers like Louis and go toe to toe with Charles a million times and then fight his best fight with arguably the greatest HW swarmer (Marciano) and take their best shots----Patterson isn't going to stop Walcott in no three rounds. Not five, not seven, not ten. He isn't going to stop Walcott for shit.
Although Charles is definitely greater all-time than Patterson, he was by no means a better heavyweight.
As for Marciano, didn't it take him 9 rounds of swarming to KO Moore, but than only a year later Patterson ko'd him in 5 with one punch?
And i don't want to here how suddenly faded Moore became between fights. He had shown no sign of slipping between the two bout and continued to be a dominant fighter for another five years.
At the very least to say Patterson had no shot of ko'ing Walcott, because Marciano and Louis had so much trouble doing it is nonsense

I dont see Patterson stopping Walcott. I do however see him winning a
tough fight. This would be a pretty fun one to watch. I see Patterson's
speed and inside and in and out flurries being the determining factor in this
bout.
Patterson UD.

Re: Floyd Patterson vs Jersey Joe Walcott
My take, I think we'd need more than one fight. I really can clearly see a victory for either man, here.
Patterson's speed & rhythm wouldn't have sat well with Walcott, who preferred to be the faster man, dictating offense via his defense. Getting beaten to the punch by the faster Patterson spells trouble, in my book.
On the other hand, Patterson's handspeed was so extreme, his combinations often became sloppy (this is quite reminiscent of a young Zab Judah, who once said he had trouble controlling his combos as a result of his great handspeed), & if anyone could make you pay for a mistake, Walcott was the man at Heavyweight to do it whilst on the backfoot. His one-shot KO of the more durable Ezzard Charles (though Patterson was indeed a game bastard) proves that, while not likely, it's possible Walcott can win via KO, as well as on a decision.
Tough, tough call.

I agree...a rubber match would be in order regardless of the outcome.

It's debatable. Both are under-appreciated as Heavyweight champions, but Charles ridiculously so. I think a case can be made in either direction.
