Once-beaten Lancastrian Michael Jennings ventures to New York's Madison Square Garden on February 21 for a dream showdown with once-beaten Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto.
At stake is the vacant WBO welterweight title.
Jennings, yet to fight outside Britain, has rebuilt from a shock defeat at the hands of Midlander Young Mutley in the Midlands in January 2006, a split decision which cost him the British welterweight title. The tidy, energetic Chorley lurcher came back with fine domestic wins over Takaloo and Ross Minter, and he outscored Doncaster's gutsy Jason Rushton last month in Glasgow to take his latest winning run to six. Michael also holds a one-sided decision over current European welterweight champ Rafal Jackiewicz of Poland. The 31-year-old Jennings, 34-1 (16), is definitely letting his shots go, these days, after seemingly 'pulling' them against Mutley.
Cotto, with a daunting record of 32-1 (26), holds nothing back. The modern boxing great has smashed men of the calibre of Zab Judah, DeMarcus Corley, Randall Bailey, Ricardo Torres, Kelson Pinto... Other victims include Shane Mosley, Paul Malignaggi, Lovemore Ndou, Gianluca Branco, Oktay Urkal and Carlos Quintana. Compare these to Minter, Mutley, Jackiewicz and Rushton.
Indeed, Cotto has lost only to Mexico's Antonio Margarito, universally regarded as one of the best pound for pound fighters in boxing.
Cotto comes off that loss, however, in 11 thrilling rounds in Las Vegas in the summer. It was a fight in which Cotto gave everything and still wound up on his knees, battered and exhausted. One wonders how much the punishing affair has taken out of 28-year-old Miguel. He had looked a bit shaky in one or two fights before Margarito but dug deep and came through.
Still, Cotto's career has been consistently top-level, surely a level above the gutsy Jennings. Cotto is a brilliant body puncher, a brilliant combination puncher, and he faces Margarito again if he gets past Jennings (and Margarito gets past Mosley), for potfuls of money. He will want to look good.
Ask youself this: would Jennings have taken the huge, remorseless Margarito 11 bruising rounds? No, in a word. Cotto looks too seasoned, too gifted, too heavy handed.

It's down on BoxRec as NY, but I've been told AC and PR are the options. But that info's 6 days old.

Great signings for FW, I wonder how much they cost him. People have said recently that his camp is on the wane but this is the ideal boost

And he's brave as chuff.
Totally agree. He has good movement and is technically sound.

He'll make it interesting for at least 5 rounds, then Cotto's strength may tell.

Cheers mate, might have it if it is new york, but stick AC and not sure what Puerto Rico would be like
