Boxing Style

Post by Would_Be_Boxer »

Im 5'2" and 135lbs. A southpaw peek' a boo style boxer. I like being very aggressive and fighting from the pocket, BUT I have heard this could eventually get me pummeled. Is that true? I tend to be shorter than the guys I spar so my moves are more compact. Am I doing something wrong?

P.S. Please Reply

I wouldn't say that you're doing wrong, you know that you're doing something wrong if your trainer says so or if you're getting the shit kicked out of you, otherwise you should be alright. In amateur boxing, because the fights are very short agression is very important. If you're short, try to slip, duck and weave your weigh inside the taller boxer, beat on his body and when his hands drop take it to the head. Mix up the body and the head but try to keep your opponent on the ropes and very close to you.

Punch to the head or body first in closing?

Post by Would_Be_Boxer »

Thanks for the response, I guess I should do what im used to then (I do win in sparring alot more than I lose anyway). Though strangely enough I tend to start my combinations with a head shot, most people cant weave out of a short guys punch(or atleast it seems that way, distance thrown maybe? it does start alot closer than normal) If they bring their head straight back out of range, then I lay into the body. But Ifrom what I have been told short people are supposed to hit the body and tall people are supposed to hit to the head, atleast at the start does that always hold true? or is it preferance?

P.s Sorry for the amateurish questions(and for my spelling and grammer)
Also i dont have a coach, im just looking around. It's mostly me and my freinds sparring. We arent pro's or anything(atleast not in boxing it self, but each of us has atleast 15 years in the martial arts, it's just adapting to another style is akward) :)

I don't think it's true that a short boxer should always go to the body and a tall one to the head. Do whatever works. You'll know if it's not working. Don't be scared to ask questions either, I've only been boxing for a year and I'm 15. I'm a taller guy for my weight, I weigh 115 pounds, but I mix it up body-head. When the head's not open I go to the body and vice-versa. It just depends on your style and the style of your opponent. If the opponent is taller than you and is not leaving his head open go to the body. If his body is hard to hit get his head. Mix it up a lot, through combinations that target both the body and the head.

Does a right hand fighter have a tougher time with a left hand fighter? I always tell people that you just circle away from the left like you would normally circle away from the right. Is there more to it than that??? Inexperience fighting left handers??(I know theres alot more right handers than lefts)

I'm a southpaw, but I don't fight like most, I'm an agressive fighters while most southpaws are counter-punchers. You're doing good by circleing away from their left.

Do you also fight from short range like me? Or does a taller person thats aggressive stand alot further away? Most of the people I spar are taller and try to snipe as I come in. They stand around alot more than move, and they would rather have me try to weave my way in than come out of there protective shell and attack. Most people dont seem to have alot of aggression, my freind Ray attacks alot but from the longest distance possible to keep me away, he's lighter than me so it's understandable.
