I agree with Joe Rogan. Every martial artist in the world has forgotten the front kick. ![[icon_e_confused.gif]](./images/smilies/icon_e_confused.gif)
Re: From our Russian friends - karate vs boxing
Ha! Is that some kind of Propoganda video from the Soviet Union to justify a higher spend on their boxing team than the Karate one.
The Karate lads didn't look like they'd thrown a punch in anger EVER. Just been practising Wax On, Wax Off obviously![[icon_e_biggrin.gif] :D](./images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif)

There's a fair few thai-boxers who'd disagree with that.Emerson Poncey Name Ghent wrote:I agree with Joe Rogan. Every martial artist in the world has forgotten the front kick.
Apart from Thai, you don't see it used massively though - especially in MMA.
Re: From our Russian friends - karate vs boxing
In that video, if he used a mae geri it would at least keep the boxer at distance, and off balance. The video also reminds me of No Retreat, No Surrender. But I can't figure out why.EddieShredder wrote:There's a fair few thai-boxers who'd disagree with that.Emerson Poncey Name Ghent wrote:I agree with Joe Rogan. Afew hard leg kicks and knee,s would have changed things lol
Re: From our Russian friends - karate vs boxing
A 'teep' (front thrust kick) into the abdomen, or even on the thigh, would make any fighter think twice about advancing, I use it in muay thai sparring alot because it allows the older and slower me some breathing time by stopping the younger guns advancing and beating the crap out of me, it eventually happens though. Also a 'teep' into the chest while the other guy is advancing is very very efffective, and yes you can do it as I have.
But in fact, all this martial art v martial art suff is never going to be the truth as most time the practioners are not evenly matched. In this clip the boxers seemed better trained than the karate practioners, and they look like they have been taught the competition karate, where you don't punch the head, just the chest.

Re: From our Russian friends - karate vs boxing
One of the guys in the video is actually a Tae Kwon Do background rather than karate, but it still proves what most of us now know, which is that traditional martial arts aren't terribly practical in real combat situations. I did Tae Kwon Do for seven years before switching to boxing as I got disillusioned with seeing people awarded black belts who wouldn't last a second on the street. Contrary to the popular myth of the traditional martial arts having more integrity and a certain mystism, I found that most organisations were full of 'paper tigers' and huge egos.
I really rate Muay Thai and would have loved MMA to have been around properly when I was younger as I would definitely have got involved, but with a few notable exceptions, the idea that traditional martial artists are highly trained in self-defence is a complete sham.

Re: From our Russian friends - karate vs boxing
Thats Bollocks
, Ive worked with 2 Karate World Champs who adapted well to Boxing, Plus they were great Kickers, once they understood the mechanics of Boxing footwork they impressed.
Re: From our Russian friends - karate vs boxing
Scrap, firstly, two karate world champs are hardly representative of the average black belt. Secondly, it depends on what discipline of karate they were studying i.e. a traditional style like Shotokan or a modern 'freestyle' variant. Thirdly, as you yourself have pointed out, they still needed time to understand the mechanics of footwork.Scrap wrote:Thats Bollocks, Ive worked with 2 Karate World Champs who adapted well to Boxing, Plus they were great Kickers, once they understood the mechanics of Boxing footwork they impressed.
Good fighters are good fighters, which is why traditional karate exponents like Terry O'Neill were able to adapt to the street, but your 'average' traditional black belt these days will have no real practical experience of having to use their 'art' in a full-contact scenario.
To paraphrase Bruce Lee, it's like trying to practise your front crawl on dry land - you can do it for eight years but it doesn't mean sh*t until you plunge into the water and find out whether it works!

Genuine legend.
Re: From our Russian friends - karate vs boxing
I'm LMAO at all the karate/mma guys here getting their knickers in a twist over that video
Having done both Boxing and Kick Boxing, i've got some experience of kicking and its great against people who are willing to stand there and be kicked but crap against anyone with good footwork and hand/eye co-ordination as kicks are much harder to disguise than punches.
Anyways like i've always said, if you gave a good quality top 10 boxer 6 months to adapt to mma in terms of the way they move, attack and defend, a boxer would wipe the floor with them anytime and under any rules!

Re: From our Russian friends - karate vs boxing
As Deserter said there's a guy in there who has tae kwon do written on the back of his gi.
On the front kick (mae geri) subject I think it is quite an ineffective weapon in fighting most of the time, in MMA people have opted against it as your gonna be aiming at the guys mid section meaning if you miss your leg is right there to be grabbed. Leg kicking seems to be the most commonly used form of kicking in MMA, you see a few people like Cro cop effectively using head kicks nearly always roundhouse kicks (mawashi geri.)
I think Karate is quite limited in effectiveness in a street or MMA fight tho, it's always working in straight lines (or it was when I did it for a few years) there were no hooking punches or uppercuts, it was always straight shots, and your unused hand was always meant to be by your side which obviously isn't effective in a real fight as someone can just clock you round the chin with a hook while your throwing a punch. Also in karate there's a lot of emphasis on blocking rather than dodging in my opinion.
