Friday Night Fights - Zappa v Browne
Friday Night Fights - Zappa v Browne
Pretty decent card on fox this Friday. The Main event is a beauty with two of Australia's top fighters going at it. This will be Lenny's biggest test to date. The last time he 'stepped up' was to take on Ryan Langham which turned out to be an exciting three rounds and good victory for Zappa. Browne on the other hand is a former World Title challenger and has some pretty good names on his resume. Since coming back from a spell last year he hasn't exactly set the world on fire but he still has the runs on the board. It will be interesting to see how this fight plays out, is Zappa the prospect we want him to be? How much does Browne have left? These question should be answered come Friday night.
Daniel Geale also makes an appearence on the card taking on Kiwi Daniel McKinnon. It is a fight that should be a showcase for Geale's talent and fend off any potential ring rust while he waits for bigger things but pugilism is a funny game where anything can happen and McKinnon does at least have a winning record. Still Geale should put on a show.
Matthew Paulley and Davey Browne will also provide some interest. How long will it take Paulley to get cut and can Davey score a KO are the questions :P

Anyway, it's good to see a good card get on TV. What do you guys think of it? WIll you be tuning in?

Re: Friday Night Fights - Zappa v Browne
nice post. Can't wait for it myself. The unveilling of Super Zappa (aka the law). I hope that it doesn't end up with the same result as cool willie though. As stated this is his biggest test so far. But for me, i think it holds more meaning for Browne. If he wins then he is truly back on track and should be only a few fights away from another shot. If he loses, then it might be the end of the road, or he could take up a gate keeper role? I don't think so tbhMarlin wrote:Pretty decent card on fox this Friday. Geale should make short work of McKinnon. He should be in a different class.

Should be a good card, Have you got Foxtel now Marlin.
Re: Friday Night Fights - Zappa v Browne
A well matched and interesting main event to end the year with. How Zappa performs will indicate where he wants to be next year. Daniel will prove too strong but the Kiwi will put up more fight than their cricket side.

Re: Friday Night Fights - Zappa v Browne
i got nothin against browne , in fact i probably like him more than zappa at the moment, and i give him a big chance here
but i hope zappa gets him out of there early, and looks extremely impressive in the process,
cos oz boxing needs, a good young prospect, with an exciting style for the general public to watch and get right behind him

Re: Friday Night Fights - Zappa v Browne
Hats off to Browne & Zappa for getting it on.If only we could see more of our talented fighters match up instead of protecting taxi driver padded records. This is an excellent card.
Re: Friday Night Fights - Zappa v Browne
spot on razor!!
the majority of comments made on this forum about more of our fighters meeting each other are well founded but i would like an honest answer on who actually decides who fights who?? i am involved somewhat behind the scenes and have seen and heard discussions on whether this fight or that fight should go ahead and the reasons why. there are definitely guys out there who are padding records and fighting bums and not progressing as they should but is it them or their trainers/managers making the final decision??? you would think if they are reading this forum and our posts that the penny may drop one day that all we want is to see good, competitive fights and at the end of the day the best man wins.
Re: Friday Night Fights - Zappa v Browne
They may read mate, but who would listen to us. It's a business, it's money, easy money. It's short term gain for them, not long term success of the sport. Sometimes it's a case of small minds making big deals....bound to fail.unleash06 wrote:spot on razor!!the majority of comments made on this forum about more of our fighters meeting each other are well founded but i would like an honest answer on who actually decides who fights who?? i am involved somewhat behind the scenes and have seen and heard discussions on whether this fight or that fight should go ahead and the reasons why. there are definitely guys out there who are padding records and fighting bums and not progressing as they should but is it them or their trainers/managers making the final decision??? you would think if they are reading this forum and our posts that the penny may drop one day that all we want is to see good, competitive fights and at the end of the day the best man wins.

Re: Friday Night Fights - Zappa v Browne
I think we will see a trend next year of the best fighting the best Kicket has set a precedence doing this with positive response.
Foxtel want better matches as well alla UFC/Muay Thai.
Will be interesting to see how Zappa responds in deap water (well I think)

Re: Friday Night Fights - Zappa v Browne
Watch for Geale to call out Mundine after he destroys McKinnon tonight!!!!!

Re: Friday Night Fights - Zappa v Browne
Seen a real clinic put on tonight by Zappa. Zappa stoped Tommy Browne in the sixth with a left rip to the body, it was an all action fight the whole 6 round.
Daniel Geale walked through Mckinnon, knocking him down 5 times, but going down himself when he walked into a stray punch, wasn't hurt, then Geale retaliated with a ko again 20 seconds later, pretty disappointing from Geale though, thought he carried Mckinnon the distance and probally could have ended it in round 3 or 4.
Pretty good card tonight.

Re: Friday Night Fights - Zappa v Browne
Geale would have been more intent if his title had been on the line. It was a good performance for a "keep busy" fight.
The demolition job Zappavigna did on Browne should answer any questions about whether he will go easy on friends.

Re: Friday Night Fights - Zappa v Browne
Awesome display by Zappa, credit to Browne for withstanding some good shots to the body.
Geale wanted the 10 rounds..only 2nd fight this year...he toyed with him.
nice right hook to send him down the first time!

Re: Friday Night Fights - Zappa v Browne
what a good card all around
Zappa was great, Browne is no mug but every shot zappa threw was loaded....really loaded. I just wish he would keep that left a little higher in general. Great to see two top australian fighters not afraid to face one another, and then not afraid to throw the leather.
I thought Geale was very measured. He stepped it up when he wanted too but getting the rounds under his belt was not a bad idea. He will be tested if he wants Mundine though. No one he has fought has been as quick as Mundine. McKinnon was game but just not up to that class.
Orlarte was good as well. I actually had that at best a 1 round win for Browne perhaps a draw. Would love to know what Ben thought? Browne didn't seem to know how to handle Orlarte, he needed to impose himself more.
I was also impress with the 3rd fight of Casserley. He is not too tall for a light middle/middle but very powerful. It was a good display and i think he might be a good prospct.

Re: Friday Night Fights - Zappa v Browne
This excellent card could be best summed up as a night of blood and guts. Tons of intestinal fortitude was displayed by the losers and there was plenty of blood shed.
Olympian Joel Brunker was too strong for a game Kane Buckley winning every round, although Kane came to fight in the opening 4 rounder.
Steve Casserley's bigger hits to a toll on an awkward Jean Claude who succumbed to a bad cut in round 6 with Steve leading comfortably on points. Jean has a very open style which got him into trouble at times.
Davey Browne won on all cards over a game Rey Anton Olarte. Davey won 4 rounds to 2 but Ray showed plenty of ticker. Davey adopted a more aggressive stance against Rey and was willing to mix it up a bit more to the detriment of his boxing skills.
Our little Aussie bleeder: Matthew Paulley was cut badly after 53 seconds against David Wiremu in a willing contest. Matt suffered more cuts and the final one in round 6 caused the fight to be scrapped due an accidental head clash. Matt, who looked like an extra from a splatter movie, was just ahead on points as at round 5 and was handed the victory. But seriously Matt, you need to reconsider your career as your dial cannot support much further punishment.
Lenny Zappavigna and Tommy Browne put on a 6 round war in a high intensity effort by both men. Very little clinching and Lenny was ahead by 4 rounds when the stoppage happened, due to both his hand speed and heavy hitting combinations. Tommy was hoping Lenny would tire himself out and put in his best work in the last 30 seconds of the rounds. But Lenny's fast accurate punching and rips to the body slowed Tommy down and the final rip to Tommy's torso would have stopped a rhino. Lenny is a hot prospect and the US big money beckons on that performance.
The final fight between Daniel Geale and Daniel McKinnon was a bit of an anti-climax to the previous bout, but the local Daniel got plenty of ring time over the valiant visitor. DG had a trip to the canvas whilst DM was dropped 4 times. But to DM's credit he got up each time but finished a mile behind on points. DG could have pressed the fight a bit more but he needed the time inside the ropes. As for fighting Daman on that performance, DG needs a few more fights under his belt against quality opposition that will get him out of his comfort zone (remember how he stepped up against Daniel Dawson). A fight against Jamie Pittman in 2009 would be a good starter.

I thought the same thing when watching the fight, he's just tested Asiku in his last fight as well, maybe Browne dropping him on the bell helped him.toppity wrote:what a good card all around

Just heard Renee Ganoy lost to a south african by a 4th round KO, where does he go from here?
Re: Friday Night Fights - Zappa v Browne
Lenny looked really good in his fight with Browne, He was tiring though late so i still wonder about his stamina to go into the later rounds.
Geale looked content to just beat up McKinnon and go 10 rounds. Maybe a ploy to get Mundine to fight him?

To be honest mate i was having a few beers with my brother while watching. So i missed a fair bit of the early fights as we were talking, eating and getting beerstoppity wrote:How did you score the Olarte V Browne fight Ben?ben k wrote:Lenny looked really good in his fight with Browne, He was tiring though late so i still wonder about his stamina to go into the later rounds.

I might watch it when its on again and score it. Best way is to turn off the commentory as they are normally biased one way or the other.
Re: Friday Night Fights - Zappa v Browne
It was for the IBF's No 2 lightweight contender spot. The fight was in South Africa but Ranee's opponent was Fernando Angulo, born Ecuador, lives in Venezuela. Angulo went the distance with Juan Diaz in a challenge for the WBA Lightweight title in 2006. Good fighter.Hounddog wrote:Just heard Renee Ganoy lost to a south african by a 4th round KO, where does he go from here?

I actually thought he was pretty average. He seemed to hold a lot and was pretty limited in what he threw.toppity wrote:I was also impress with the 3rd fight of Casserley. He is not too tall for a light middle/middle but very powerful. It was a good display and i think he might be a good prospct.
I thought Brunker was good though. Loaded up on his punches and committed to his attack showing good angles and movement.
