Remembering Chuck Gardner......

Do people remember Chuck Gardner blown out in a round in a pathetic mismatch in Spain?

Well I remembered this farce - it was touted as the worst mismatch ever. Anyway I was looking at his record for old time's sake, and saw that the previous fight he had beaten no less than Jimmy Young.....

(Admittedly a 38 year old version)....but this was a shock to me....have the mighty ever fallen so low?

Yeah, it was Duff and Lawless at their worst. When the referee pulled out the fallen Gardner's gumshield, Gardner's false teeth also came out. Harry Mullan slated the match in BN before it took place, but it was held in France I believe, so the Board were powerless to prevent it.
Duff, typically in his autobiography, blamed others.

How could we ever forget? As Warren said after Bruno had flattened him inside a round "My gardener could've beaten him"

Cannes, south of France. Bruno fought Reggie Gross on the Honeyghan card in Marbella. Gross is currently rotting in jail after being convicted of several gangland murders.

I went to the Marbella fight. Gross was just there for the payday of course, but at one time he was a real prospect. He was one of the first fighters to actualy try and beat a young Mike Tyson. He threw everything he had at him, even catching him with a good left hook before Tyson blasted him out with a left hook of his own.

I remember Terry Lawless slagging the referee in the Bruno-Gross fight. Lawless felt the referee let it continue too long. "You're a disgrace," he shouted in the ref's face immediately after the fight was stopped.
This was two months after Lawless had put Gardner in with Bruno!

Yes I remember that 'fight' very well, think it lasted about 91 seconds didn't it? Shocking mismatch big Chuck could have gotten seriously hurt, Bruno was a big puncher.

I seem to recall he entered the ring with a limp from a twisted ankle, there was also speculation he was a lot older than his listed age. I remember seeing him in a documentry once about Boxing mismatches, he looked a right bar room brawler. He said if I recall correctly that he knew he was just there to be knocked out, but was annoyed cause he said he didn't realise that Bruno was such a big hard punching heavy.

As for Gardeners 'win' over the shadow of the once very talented Jimmy Young, Jimmy had serious drink and druck problems by that time, still a shocking result though. Simular to Leon Spinks loses to K.P.Porter and John Carlo, very sad indeed.

I'm sure Chuck Gardener has had some bit parts in films, playing fighters/heavys etc. I'm sure he played a bareknuckle fighter in a film called somethink like The Kiss, never been able to track any info on this though.

I believe outside the ring Chuck has worked as a Truck driver and in the construction industry.
