If DLH would have out muscled Mayweather in a come from behind KO win then he legacy would have been better, cause that what some experts anticipated. No experts anticipated DLH to be out hustling, out boxing, out speeding, Mayweather for large part of the fight. I am adamant the DLH had the fight won but for his 34 year old legs getting to him at the end. As I asked after the fight, who wins between 140 DLH in 1997, or 140 Mayweather in 2007... and most seemed to suggest the former. .
Mayweather outlanded 2-1, I don't see that as close, he outlanded Oscar in every round. He didn't go through his full repituire. You also neglect the fact that Oscar had the advantage of the fight been at 154 (2 weight classes higher than FMJ should of been fighting), had around 14lbs more weight on the night curtesy of a 36hour weigh in, chose the gloves, chose the ring. He was also

At 140 in 2005 Mayweather is much nearer to his prime weight than Delahoya is, Oscar has less size advantages, is possibly somewhat drained and FMJ still outskills Oscar with Oscar still having a poor connect rate. Bare in mind this is also the Oscar who wasn't as quite defensively savy who didn't deserve the decision in my mind against an older faded Whitaker or Quartey.

Judah? Early on in the Mayweather fight his speed was undoubtedly giving Mayweather problems and was at least the equal of DLH.
However, you've got some valid points re. a fast, offensive fighter causing Mayweather issues. To my mind, Mayweather isn't in Leonard's class purely because he's so defensively minded.

Judah is the quickest fighter Mayweather has ever faced. He's quicker than Floyd himself.

Deserter, do you not rate Whitaker then? As he was the most defensively minded fighter of the last 20 years.

I rate Sweet Pea very highly, certainly up there with Floyd, but still not up there with Leonard, who showed greater variety and desire IMO. Though I acknowledge that Leonard was fortunate in terms of having the opportunity to prove himself against fellow contemporary greats like Hearns and Duran.

What do you mean by 'defensively minded'? Because when I watched Pernell fight, I never classed him as someone who was 'defensively minded'. In fact, in a lot of Whitaker's fights he would be the one going forwards, letting his hands go and initiating the action, especially in his early fights. A defensive wizard? Yes, most definitely. But I'd never call him defensively minded. Defensively minded to me describes someone like Johnny Nelson or Sven Ottke. Even Bernard Hopkins. Someone who has defence on their mind at all times. Whitaker was never Arturo Gatti, but I found him quite exciting to watch.

I can't believe people are so naive as to believe this.

Do you really think he has invested his money wisely and is living off the cream?
My impression is that he is regularly eating away at his capital

Maybe so, but he remains unbeaten, and in Pacman he won't be facing a bigger guy. He beat Oscar at 154, and didn't look outgunned at all - though he was certainly respectful of Oscar's punching.
Honestly, i dont know how u think that Mayweather wasn't outgunned, he ran like a girl, and turned the highest grossing fight of all time into the flop of alltime. I still think Oscar won the fight and 1 judge agrees with me watch the fight again, thats why PBF wouldn't fight him again.
Pacman will beat PBF, but i dont think PBF will fight him, that 0 is just too precious for a man of his nature.

I would agree with that, and Leornard didn't leave the game with any unanswered questions, he fought them all, Hearns, Hagler, Duran.
Floyd hasn't fought Mosely,Margarito or Williams, Oscar was a impressive w on his record and he beat Hatton, but now there is a man called Pacman in the mix, he needs to come out of retirement and fight at least 2 of these guys.

Good point, but sort of validates what I was saying. Mayweather cannot handle speedsters. Judah hasn't got the offensive "nouse" of DLH, thats why he isn't as good, thats why the fight wasn't as close with Mayweather - but for my money, Mayweather's two closest fights have been against speedsters. I fail to see the controvesy with the Castillo fight fight (which Mayweather won with one hand).

Mitchell, Corley? Sorry, not in DLH's league in terms of hand speed.... I would say Gatti is quicker than them.

Amazing isn't it, a year ago, all of us would have felt justified in saying that Mayweather v Pacman was an outrageous mismatch - a bridge too far - a fight we didn't want to see.

Now, some of us are leaning towards Pacman winning!

I think we need to check ourselves here. Oscar hadn't fought at 147 in seven years, was 35, inactive, and had looked poor in his last fight. Oscar couldn't pull the trigger at all during the fight, and looked slow and weak. Sure Pacman fought sensationally, but he was in against a sitting duck who could neither evade nor block the punches.

Pacman will have a MUCH harder time hitting Mayweather. People talk about Corley and Judah giving him problems, PLEASE they both got the shit beaten out of them - landing one or two meaningful shots doesn't equate to having someone on queer street.

I want to see Mayweather v Pacman, but I think basing Pacman's chances on his performance against DLH, is very dangerous territory indeed.

Bear in mind, Ray Leonard was almost exactly the same age as DLH, when he lost to Terry Norris, and he too was moving down to a weight he hadn't been at for seven years. Just because Norris beat Leonard, didn't mean he could beat Simon Brown, who ripped him to pieces two years later.

Pacman is getting better, no doubt, he is much improved from the fighter who lost to Morales, but Mayweather is a defensive wizard who is also a great strategic fighter, who knows how to nullify his opponents strengths, he will watch plenty of tape of Pacquaio, and will have a plan A, B and C on how to beat him, and unlike Oscar, he will throw enough shots to keep Manny honest.

We all need to take a breath here.

A year ago I think you are right James, I still saw Pacquiao as a bulked up Featherweight - but even discounting and discrediting the DLH fight... he has shown himself to be a teak tough Lightweight. If the fight is at 140 lbs - then its a toughie to call.

Its the Diaz fight that impressed me more than the DLH one, for the reasons you outlined. It was the Diaz fight that I found it hard to call between DLH and Pacquiao (the DLH vs Forbes against the Pacquiao vs Diaz).

I felt that the step up in weight wouldn't be that hard for Pac, but did think he may lose some power but keep his speed. I no don't think thats the case, he seems to have the power of old as well.
