Tyson Fury - the new John McDermott?
Re: Tyson Fury - the new John McDermott?
He came across as a nice kid .. but he doesn`t look as if he trains too hard .. to a certain level he`ll dominate smaller less ambitious guys, but sooner or later he`ll meet somebody as big and thats when he`ll need conditioning and xtra strength.
I look forward to following the kid.

My, my you chaps really do need to be accurate concerning some of your comments!!!Gray-Fox wrote:He took over Panos Eliades/Panix Promotions didn't he?Dirk Kelly wrote:
On a side note - when did Hennesey start promoting. Emerson thought he'd been around since Graham and I thought he's only been around the same sort of time as Fight Academy.
That must have been around 2001/2 when Carl Froch turned pro...though I imagine Hennessy was doing small hall/dinner show stuff prior.
Mick Hennessy's first show as a professional boxing promoter was at the York Hall on 16 Mar 02.
As for the comments concerning Panos Eliades - typical sh*t myth - Mick Hennessy promotes his shows without the aid of Panos Eliades and I would love someone to prove otherwise.
In addition the other stuff written concerning who the original members of "The Class Of 2002" - they were as follows:
Carl Froch
David Walker
Lee Meager
Leo O'Reilly
Matthew Thirlwall
Francis Barrett was NOT an original member of the Class of 2002 - his first appearance on a Hennessy Sports card was 25 Oct 02.
Billy Corcoran was NOT an original member of the Class of 2002 - his first appearance on a Hennessy Sports card was 23 Aug 02.
Lenny Daws was NOT an original member of the Class of 2002 - his first appearance on a Hennessy Sports card was 16 Apr 03.
Anyhow I have a holiday to enjoy!!!

I like Big Bad John McDermott. Offensively he puts his shots together well and has decent hand speed. He also has a flabby physique hence my comparisons with Fury. In Tyson's defence, I think he has a better chance of shedding the puppy fat as he matures but I expected him look to more toned on his debut.
I understand your comparison better now and can see the similarities you've highlighted. It's way too early for me to speak with any authority on Fury, but I fancy Tyson to fair (fare??) better than BIG BAD John in the pro game, hence my comment on the thread title.
I don't think that Fury is ever gonna look ripped up, but his shape should improve abit as he was dragged back early from his honeymoon for this fight and Hennessy admitted he wasn't in shape.

Re: Tyson Fury - the new John McDermott?
I can understand why someone would compare John McDermott with Tyson Fury, both won the ABA senior super-heavyweight at a very young age (McDermott 20, Tyson 19), but Fury also won a lot of medals at World and European Junior level which I don't think McDermott ever did. I don't think Fury looks that out of shape considering he made his debut at very short notice, in fact Williams, Harrison and Skelton have all seemed as fleshy during one time or another in their careers.Ben Carey wrote:It's far too early to judge Tyson Fury after his pro debut at the weekend but it was hard to take him seriously as a prospect when he entered the ring with a flabby physique fighting a guy weighing just 13 1/2 stone!
How an earth did the Board allow Fury to box someone with a five stone weight advantage. Even if he is a debutant that should never have been allowed. As for how Fury looked, well he was loose and delivered a decent left hook to the body for the finish.
I think Fury has all the natural ability, but because he comes from travelling stock there is a bit of cynicism on how disciplined he is outside of the ring. Apparently he doesn't drink, but I think his diet may not be the best. However I'm sure a conditioner like Kerry Kayes would soon be able to sort that out and as a professional he may just trim down anyway.
Back to the McDermott comparisons and another factor why I think Fury can go a long way is watching him spar. As an 18 year-old I saw Fury handle a top 15 rated British heavyweight fairly comfortably in the gym. Seeing that made my mind up that Fury was a little bit special and hopefully he will prove that in the next few years.

Scrap I have to bow to your superior knowledge and opinion here but is Kerry Kayes really the premier guy and the work he does, is it really SO crucial.
Boxing created some good fighters before the "science" of nutrition emerged didn't it and weight lifting too for that matter.
I'm probably just ignorant and naive. Actually, I know I am.

Kayes is highly thought of as not only did Hatton use his services, but so have Frankie Gavin and Joe Calzaghe. My post wasn't meant to be plugging Kayes, just that getting Tyson Fury into lean, fighting shape shouldn't be too difficult if Fury has the right team around him which he should get from Hennessy Sports.

I know he won a world junior bronze, but I don't recall him winning many others.scrap iron wrote:

I'm pretty sure he won gold at the EU junior championships and I think silver or bronze at the European junior championships. Michael Maguire won gold at Bantamweight in the same competition.Gray-Fox wrote:I know he won a world junior bronze, but I don't recall him winning many others.scrap iron wrote:

Re: Tyson Fury - the new John McDermott?
I put in another thread that Fury reminded me of Gerry Cooney, just in the looks and the way he held his hands in the ring.
Obviously i'm not saying that Fury has the same skills or punching power.
Its early days for him, if he's still being matched like this after a couple of fights then i might have a moan, but i'd expect a slow buildup for him.

No offence fella, but this is exactly the attitude I don't understand - how can that match, with that disparity in weight AND ability be justifiable in any circumstances at all?Old bones Ian wrote:if he's still being matched like this after a couple of fights then i might have a moan, but i'd expect a slow buildup for him.

Re: Tyson Fury - the new John McDermott?
As his debut it was about getting him in the ring, getting used to a professional show, all that goes on in the background, the opponent was secondary for the promoters.Deserter wrote:No offence fella, but this is exactly the attitude I don't understand - how can that match, with that disparity in weight AND ability be justifiable in any circumstances at all?Old bones Ian wrote:if he's still being matched like this after a couple of fights then i might have a moan, but i'd expect a slow buildup for him.
As a fan of course i'd of liked to see him take on a better opponent, but i can understand why the promoter didn't match him like that.
Re: Tyson Fury - the new John McDermott?
I can't understand at all, as it was a farce. Nobody can seriously tell me an opponent couldn't be found who wasn't so dramatically outweighed and who could have given Fury a few rounds.Old bones Ian wrote:As his debut it was about getting him in the ring, getting used to a professional show, all that goes on in the background, the opponent was secondary for the promoters.Deserter wrote:No offence fella, but this is exactly the attitude I don't understand - how can that match, with that disparity in weight AND ability be justifiable in any circumstances at all?Old bones Ian wrote:if he's still being matched like this after a couple of fights then i might have a moan, but i'd expect a slow buildup for him.

It ended up looking like a freak show rather than a professional boxing debut and the crowd reaction was very telling.

Re: Tyson Fury - the new John McDermott?
And rightly so on occasion - I've yet to see anyone mount a really convincing argument as to why complete mismatches somehow act as a useful learning curve for a fighter.Hagler2002 wrote:Oh how I remember when Lewis & Bruno got the same slating
Oh, and by the way, Lewis's first opponent was by some margin better than the cruiserweight that Fury fought:

Re: Tyson Fury - the new John McDermott?
Only just seen the fight.
I don't think he should be taken seriously until he gets down to around 16 stone.
He had a few nice punches but against a punch bag 5 stone lighter than him then hes not shown us anything.
I think he does have a little talent though and just hope he improves now and takes this opportunity seriously.
