USA Boxing Opens Search for a New Coach

USA Boxing has an article about the search for a new National Coach. The criteria are fairly detailed and the coach will start work June 2009 in Colorado Springs. If they can find someone who fits the criteria, we will have a great start to revamping our boxing program. I like that they did not make an undergraduate degree a necessity. Don't get me wrong I am not against education. I have a BBA and JD. I just think this position is one that doesn't necessarily require a degree.

what characteristics do you hope to see in the new coaching director? what are the goals you'd like to see accomplished?

What should be and what will be are two different points of view. All concerned have to think about pulling up stakes and moving to Colorado Springs for not a whole lot of money. I was kinda surprised that the requirements didn't ask that the applicant have a Level 4 coaching certification; I guess if you've been training elite boxers for a minimum of 7 years the applicant will already have that. It will definitely be easier for someone who is retired to make this kind of move. T'will be interesting. D

Well I can't see Barry Hunter doing it with with the Petersons on the brink and all the other pros he deals with, and I do think that in the end if you wind up with 2 good names you really did something, The rubic's cube of attributes combined with the fact of moving makes this a tough find. Then again there is an old saying "If a qualified Level IV can't come to the Mountains".....Just a thought that would sure open some big possibilities.

What are you saying Hal? Are you interested but want to move the OTC to Salisbury?

I wish they'd move the OTC back to Maryland....

I'm saying be open to possibilities that will accomplish the final goal. Heck, the way you mess with my head, you could take on the role of team psychologist. But yes, If you had two or three qualified coaches that had the place to do it, the job would get done. The good coaches given a job to do, get the job done. they have done it for years and have proven that they can turn out the worlds best boxers in meager conditions. If there are better conditions than that, it is just the icing on the cake. The people that do the job right now, do it in some of the humblest of conditions. In fact. that is the rocky factor that builds toughness. But if there was enough space for training a team, a reasonable accommodation's for room and board why not add to the diversity of top level training. The Strength trainer could travel as well. If it would not work on a full time basis. I absolutely know it would would work on a part time basis, with camps of up to two months or less

Imagine say Barry Hunter working in conjunction with a couple of coaches and incorporating the system that is in effect and already works. so you have a almost a team effort in a particular region. If it works, perpetuate it elsewhere and if it doesn't, shut it down. There would be nothing to loose, everything to gain and there is plenty of time to find out.
