Mickey Vann Enforced Retirement - Good or Bad?

He has made some silly mistakes/decisions as both a referee and a judge but when you consider how many fights he's been involved with(not just "world" title fights) it's not suprising really but then again people only remember the bad decisions.

I think Mickey is a good ref, far better than some of the shite they have in the states

Mickey Vann's been a good referee. I wish him well in the future.

BUT, his comments on Barry McGuigan were cheap and nasty.

McDonnell was winning IMO but the outcome was not a certainty at the point of the cut eye stoppage. To say McGuigan was going nowhere is a fecking joke. He was one win away from challenging for a world title, how the hell is that "going nowhere" :??

I don't know the reason why Board have this ruling in place, but my guess is to rule out the subjective nature of who would be deemed worthy to continue after 65 and who may not be considered up to the job anymore.

At least with the current way it is the same for everyone and it may also avoid any instances where a referee, after age 65, drops a clanger or a boxer gets seriously hurt whilst he's in charge. If this was to happen I bet the exact opposite would be happening on the forum's with posters demanding an upper age limit be brought in. Sometimes they can't win, but I think it's a decent enough ruling.
