I dunno if I agree with that Stu - Getting hit on the chin hard is going to have a negative effect, the important point being that some fighters can withstand a bit more than another. I think we can agree that Lacy was finished as a fighter after what Calzaghe did to him, and that was one fight.

Cotto was beaten up pretty badly I thought, mix in the mental issues, and he could be on the slippery slope. Cotto is also easy to hit, even when he was battering Gomez he still had his lip busted up, and that was what many perceived as being totally one sided.

I think Jennings can do himself proud here, if anything it is the lack of seasoning which is going to let him down.

Lacy vs Calzaghe wasn't just a hard fight for Lacy - it was a kicking.A fight that could have been stopped as early as the 4th or 5th and somehow lasted the distance. We will never know exactly how much that fight took out of Lacy - cause alot of people, myself included, bought the Lacy hype over beating a shot and disinterested Reid (as subsequent fights showed) and a shot Pemberton (as subsequent fights showed).

But whatever, that was a completely different fight to the Margarito vs Cotto one. The Cotto fight was very close on the cards at the time of the stoppage, it wasn't a one sided pummelling for 3 minutes of every round.

Jennings has been hurt in the 1st round of a couple of his fights, but he has also shown good skills and knows what to do when hit with a good shot.
Cotto is a completly different level to anything that Michael has faced so far, but i think he may well cause a few problems for Cotto

In all seriousness - why is Jennings fighting someone like Cotto in his first step up from domestic level?? I know it makes him money and he has a "punches chance" but in all reality it will be an absolute beating. Why has Jennings not fought for the European title and maybe fought a few fringe world title contenders before even considering Cotto. Lets not forget Cotto outboxed Tony for most of the first half of the fight, it wasnt like he was out of his depth - he is still a definite p4p contender.

People aren't moaning about that at all, they're moaning (justifiably) about Jennings being 'thrown to the lions' rather than having his career built up properly to prepare him for this level.

Hardly time to build up your career - he might as well go for it and sure most likely he'll get beat, and beat bad but theres a small chance he could cause cotto a few problems. Even if he's gets beaten easily at least he can say he fought one of the best in the world - no shame in coming up short against a fighter like that. He could well still be unbeaten right now so its not like he's found his level. I think its worse to never test yourself and fight anyone remotely world class your whole career whilst going unbeaten.

You're both missing the point... the contention among most on here is that it should never have reached this stage and Jennings should have been brought along at a better pace throughout his career to date.
However, glad you're happy to watch 'fights' like Lockett Vs Pavik

I remember the same tired arguments coming out regarding the Pavlik vs Lockett fight and how Lockett had a 'puncher's chance'.
Boxing for me is all about competitive fights, not about lambs to the slaughter. There's no sport in that.

Agree with those who have not been too keen on this matchup. Jennings is a lovely little boxer and has some great skills but he is going from strictly domestic class all the way to the top. Jennings career has been a bit of a shame, far too long fighting 6/8 rounds to mark the time when he should have been moved to Euro level and then hopefully to World class as I feel he could have beaten some good guys (although he would have more than 1 defeat on his record). As it is being thrown in with Cotto, he has a snowballs chance in hell and will probably be heavily stopped. All the best to him mind.

What is the alternative? Ban title holders from fighting supposedly mediocre guys? Allow them to fight catchweight fights against badly faded old men for fight after fight? Cotto is coming off a devastating loss. He is taking on a highly ranked contender. No problem with that.

Jennings may be unfashionable, fighting a contender from your own division (one who has boxed other men in the division over a period of time) may be unfashionable. Yet we do need these type of fights to take place. Otherwise you sit there watching guys like Moore, Froch (until recently) and every British fighter who deserves a shot sitting around watching the world and his, smaller, uncle get a shot at the titles they contend for.

People cannot bitch and moan about bodies cooking their rankings to accommodate lighter/smaller/retired men, only to then throw the toys out of the pram when a ranking guy, one who has worked for that ranking, gets a shot at a title.

Terry, I think your Mancunian bias is getting the better of you here. Just how has Jennings 'worked' for that ranking ?
We don't need these types of matches to take place at all - mismatches are what gives boxing a bad name, as well as the 'badly faded old men' that you reference.
