When he turned pro I was very scathing about him, thought it was a publicity stunt making a mockery of our game.
I thought how can someone of his age and experience become a pro boxer, I would have been happy to see him whacked out.
And on top of this there was talk about him becoming a champion!!
He intially was matched against the weakest opposition possible, where he won clearly, but decent prospects would have got the job done in a hurry.
Fair enough though, he'd had a couple of wins, but then he started to improve further and at a rate of knots, suddenly he was looking like a genuine prospect.
It would still be a big job to get a domestic title, but at his rate of improvement, who knows. I had already been proved badly wrong about his quality.
To be fair if he had to finish now he as still achieved hugely.
Good luck to the fella, I know hope he proves me wrong further

i thought exactly the same, still dont think he could get to British Title level, i think he will hit his level at english title if not sooner

He must be insane. He believes in an imaginary friend (God). As to his choice of career, that's up to him.

The footie is over January 2009 then it's full time in the gym.
Curtis is a quality kid, and when you think what has been achieved so far by splitting himself between two disciplines requiring dedication I can see him achieving his goal domestically at boxing now he can focus 100% on the sport.

I like what I have seen with Curtis, and he seems great in interviews - and yes, he did have a bit of a reputation as a nasty piece of work outside of football based on him being marked up and stuff and it seems that now that we know he was sparring then this reputation was completely unfounded.

However, every 6 months it seems like he is finishing and then signs a new contract. Yes, the regular wage of Football must be entising, but he should give the boxing a true go (if he wants it) - he isn't getting younger.

I like him. He could have picked up decent money for a decade and probably set himself up for the rest of his life.

I admire his bravery - and I don't just mean the automatic admiration that comes with stepping through the ropes.

His opponents will step up when he moves to the 6x3's which will be very shortly now he is playing locally with Mansfield.
The prob when he was at Rushden was the 6-8hrs travelling time he had to do, so he would either have to miss a session or would be tired so you have to adapt his training routine so he doesn't burn out.
So therefore i wasn't willing to put him up in the number of rounds because as you know there is a difference between a little 4 rounder against a journeyman and a 6 rounder.

Mansfield is only about 25 mins drive from us so it makes things so much easier for him.

I also have to say that the 9 fights so far have done him the world of good as he's fought guys with very much more experience than him as he's had no ams its been about learning. I'm not a fan of four rounders for novices as if they're a little tense and take a little getting into it, they can lose the first round and its a bit of a rush for the remaining three.


i think the six and eights will suit him more and bring his development along nicely, you don't mind him being in with a better calibre opponent when you know there are a few rounds to work the guys out.

hi dave, rhino here, tell you what, curtis is certainly looking strong to the body the times i have seen him box, is this an area you concentrate on in the gym or do body punchers addapt naturally.

A dig in the ribs is less detectable than a shot to the chin.
