Jim McIlvaney Global ID 33860

Post by RocDel »

This is my first time posting ever here at the BoxRec forum. I do hope I'm following proper procedure here.

I was doing some research on this heavyweight fighter from the UK in the mid 1960's when I came across a couple things that may want to looked at correcting with his BoxRec file.

First, I wanted to mention that I'd received a correspondence from a gentleman who introduced himself as the son of Jim McIlvaney. This was through the OOTP Title Bout forum:http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/board/t ... ed-82.html

He mentions that his father was in fact from Scotland, born in Bellshill and moved to Birmingham in 1961 at the age of 18 where he apparently resided throughout his boxing career.

Then there is something I ran across in regards to his boxing record. I have copies of the Boxing News from 1966 thru 1969 and I was looking up all the accounts in them of his fights. In the November 18th, 1966 issue it had this short account of McIlvaney's fight against Lloyd Walford on November 14, 1966:
Boxing News, Nov. 18th, 1966 - Chesterfield heavyweight, Lloyd Walford (13-0-8) punched too strongly for Jimmy McIlvaney, Leicester (14-0-4), and the referee stopped the contest in the fourth round, when McIlvaney’s left eye was badly swollen.

So this account would indicate that Walford won the fight an not McIlvaney, which is what his BoxRec file now currently shows.
If the Boxing News account is correct that would change McIlvaney's career record to W12(KO 7) / L13 (KO 11) / D3.

I don't have any other source to confirm or not the origin of his birth as Bellshill other than the note from the gentleman introduced to me as his son though the following three other accounts from issues ofthe Boxing News references him as being a Scot...

"Boxing News, Feb 25th –In the semi-finals Moore beat Jimmy McIlvaney, Scotland (13-7) in the first round, the fight being stopped after the southpaw Scot has taken a count of “nine”, and Kelly got through at the expense of Derek Groombridge, Nottingham (13-6 ½). Groombridge a sharper puncher at short range, looked to be just ahead before sustaining a cut on his left eyebrow in the third and the fight was stopped."

"Boxing News, April 1 – Heavyweight Jim McIlvaney, Birmingham-based Scot, beat Barry Rodney, Jamaica, who was disqualified for allegedly hitting on the beak I the final round."

"Boxing News, May 6 – Billy Winter, Antigua (14-3-0) put Jim McIlvaney, Glasgow (15-13-0) down for counts of 7-7=8-8 and in the fifth round and twice for nine and in the sixth and final round before the referee stopped a bout in which the Scottish boy took terrific body punishment against a wild but heavy puncher."
