One of the worst for me if not the worst is Gary Jacobs v a prime Buddy McGirt. At the time Jacobs was on the verge of a title fight so his team threw him in against a prime Buddy McGirt as a tune up in the states.

Result, Jacobs completely outclassed, what a surprise and took a beating.

Never understood that one, why place a man on the verge of a title shot against a classy great little boxer with no name appeal to the masses. Baffling.

Norris may not have been a big heavy or a puncher of any note but the gulf in experience was staggering - remember Pele had no amateur fights!

It was an extremely harsh "comeback" fight after Reid lost his unbeaten record so brutally against Francis, so in that regard it was poor matchmaking - but I guess the idea was Reid was given a "sink or swim" assignment so the backers would know if he was worth their continued investment.

As I remember it Ingle had such faith in Pele's ability he wanted him to get straight back into the mix.

It may have been a 'sink or swim' in reality but at the time Brendan was bullish about what he saw as a richly talented heavy. I myself was at the York Hall when Francis schooled Pele and looked on in disbelief - I thought he would go alot further than he ever did.

Still, he had an entertaining up and down career but in the early days he really looked like a man on a misssion..

He had the talent, shame he didn't have the chin.

Jacobs was already in New York, training and sparring and soaking up the American 'thing', when a world title fight between Edwin Rosario and Lupe Suarez fell through at the Felt Forum and they needed a replacement top of the bill.

This was a shocking match. Foskin was 6-1-1 but 5 of his previously opponents had never won a fight. To add some false credibility, the MC announced Foskin at 13-1-1. This fight was a good example of fans being ripped off.
