Marciano flattens Connolly with one punch in the First

Post by Pickle »

Rocky Marciano, undefeated heavyweight, provided the one real punch to last night's boxing show at the auditorium. It was a volcanic one too! The Brockton Bombadier, who probably packs the hardest punch of any of the nation's younger heavyweights, needed only 57 seconds and one mighty right hand smash to flatten Patrick ''Red'' Connolly of Boston in their scheduled eight rounder. The towering and bulky Bostonian, outweighing Marciano by 28 pounds, dropped to the canvas with a thud when Marciano caught him with a rapier-like hook to the head. He regained his feet at the count of 10, but he still was dazed and shaken. He rocked forward, like a ship in a storm, and instinctively wanted to continue fighting. The referee, Ben Maculan called an immediate halt. Connolly, meanwhile, staggered backward to a neutral corner and mumbled a few words to the referee. He probably wanted to continue the fight, but his handlers, meanwhile, had entered the ring and they steered him to his corner. He sat disconsolately on his stool and appeared still dazed. He looked as though he were trying to recall what struck him. There was a slight swelling under his right eye, and clear as day was the impact on the right side of his face of the thunderous punch that had dropped him. That's all there was to it, but the crowd had thrilled to that dynamic punch and Marciano received a tremendous ovation. This was Marciano's ninth straight kayo triumph. Marciano weighed 185 to Connolly's 213.

This fight took place in Providence, Rhode Island on November 29, 1948. I also have the results for the rest of the card if anyone is interested.

Steve Marcello, Providence lightweight, notched his 17th straight victory, but he wasn't impressive in winning. He outpointed Tommy ''Red'' Wells of Manchester, N.H., in an eight rounder that was for the most part dull. Wells was eager and willing, but Marcello had too much reach for him. Wells managed to land some good shots, but they were few and far between. Marcello, giving the worst performance of his career, looked lazy. His punches were feeble, and all in all, his was a hollow victory. The eight rounder between Jackie Wilson of Quincy and Freddy Ruffin of this city was almost as bad. Wilson also had too much reach for Ruffin and won six of the eight rounds. Wilson caught Ruffin whenever he wanted and with both hands. Ruffin allowed him to get set, and when the Providence lad tried to lead, Wilson invariably would beat him to the punch.
Ruffin was simply outclassed, though he did provide the one highlight of the bout by driving Wilson out of the ring with a left hook in the final round. Curtis Moore, Newark middleweight, turned in a good performance in scoring a sixth round knockout victory over Bob Davis of Philadelphia in a scheduled eight rounder. Davis was game enough, but Moore hit too hard for him. Moore battered Davis severely in the fifth round and the latter's handlers decided not to send him out for the sixth after the referee consulted with them. Jimmy Squadrito, young Providence welterweight, looked good in stopping Sonny Bentley of Fall River with a right to the jaw at 2:32 in the first round of a four rounder.
