Frank Maloney In Boxing News

I was just reading the state of the game feature in Boxing News (which is an entertaining new addition) and a four-page spread with Frank Maloney. I think he gives an honest, fair account of himself and didn't use the space to slag off all his rivals either (well Brian Peters gets a bit of treatment).

After enthusistically announcing a spate of future TV shows he seems to have made of a substantial loss and might be rethinking that idea. He also points to Sports Network's sensitivity of criticism and on the whole offers a few constructive ideas and is quite "Frank" about boxing matters. Plus, he really appears to be putting all his eggs in the Sutherland basket, whether that's wise or not who knows?

Anyway, speak as I find and I thought it was a good article and he came across well. Any thoughts?

Great article I thought, he lives and breathes the game, always has and always will, he is a good judge of a fighter and I think he is right about Sutherland, the 'kid' could be anything.

Our game would be a lot better if most promoters thought the same way, we would get a lot of the fights we wanted, a lot quicker, still you can't have everything you want in this life and we plug on with what we have.

Still the best sport in the world for me

Of the British and Irish Olympians, I am convinced Sutherland will be the most successful. He used every minute in the amateur code as a springboard to turning professional.

Hopefully he and DeGale will be on a collision course to a meeting in two or three years.

Who would your money be on if they met down the line?

think frankie gavin will be the most sucsesful out of all the olympians he looks to have got the beast team round him. i rekon degale will have alot more power than everyone thinks an would beat sutherland jefferies an grove

Frank Maloney knows the sport inside and out - regardless of what Frank thinks of people the reason why he survives is he deals with people he might not necessarily want to - but boxing is a business and sometimes the phone gets picked up to answer people you don't necessarily want to speak to!!!

Regardless of what we all think of people in boxing - Boxing needs the like of W arren, Maloney, Hearn, Hennessy, Hobson and the new kids on the block Hayemaker/Coldwell to succeed - all of the boxing promoters I think have finally realised they need to move with the times and with them realising that - and hopefully the TV companies and the BBBofC wanting competitive fights - boxing will get through the difficult period the whole world seems to be going through at present.

The Credit Crunch is f*cking serious - for people to part with their hard earned cash the boxing promoters need to up their standards and that comment applies to all of them - if they don't then they will face empty arenas and will go out of business quite quickly.

2009 is going to be horribly difficult for all - boxing is included in that - so honest and to the point articles from Maloney are welcomed in my eyes.

Spud I think you make a good point. Promoters are going to have to work together to get the best matches made and hopefully this will start happening. Lindsay V Appleby and Small V Rhodes are evidence that it could be going that way and it means fans get the best scraps and we don't have divisions of talented fighters kept apart through politics.

I like the idea that Maloney and Hayemaker are starting fighters on 6 rounds, not 4.

Well it's good that Maloney has re-designed himself somewhat and changed his approach which will preserve his longevity. He doesn't seem to resent Hayemaker's encroachment into the promotional field despite his past dealings with Haye and with Hatton and Calzaghe seemingly promoting a bit as well it could become interesting on the domestic scene. I still think Hennessy does a decent job too, despite what some people think of him.

I would love to know the cost of setting up your own TV channel, I know TV channels are going to the plug whole (fight network for example) but they also bought of lot of things, the rights to which must have cost.

I met Maloney a couple of times and he comes across as a nice fella. As for that other one.....

Who would your money be on if they met down the line?

DeGale is a lot younger than Sutherland, who was far more experienced than most at the Olympics.

DeGale has more talent and I think will be able to adapt when faced with problems as a pro.
Sutherland is certainly an exciting fighter though.

Don't think either will be anything really special though(unlike Buncey, who thinks these two along with Jeffries will eclipse Benn, Eubank, Watson etc! The man is off his rocker!!!!)
