I like Murray a lot, and his performance against Lee Meager was probably one of the best of 2008 from a domestic fighter. Although, his performance against Youseff Al-Hamidi was one of the worst too, but Hamidi was a very late replacement.

British lightweight champion John Murray defends against useful Scot Lee McAllister in a good-looking clash in Wigan on January 17.
Murray won the title (vacant) with a sharp five-round stoppage of Manchester rival Lee Meager in Wigan last July. The title was made vacant by Norfolk puncher Jon Thaxton, who stepped up and lifted the European lightweight belt and had previously outpointed Meager over 12 rounds. I thus tipped Meager to prove too seasoned and clever for the recently disappointing if unbeaten Murray, but Lee never stood a chance as the 24-year-old Murray pounced on him from the start and maintained his customary high workrate until the finish.
Trained by Joe Gallagher, it is the best John has looked for some time.
At an impressive 25-0 (13) Murray moves on to the wiry McAllister who brings an equally impressive 27-1 (5) tab to the challenge and a nice comeback story, after he nearly lost his life on Crete a few years ago in a moped smash. Interestingly, the only man to beat Lee as a pro, Midlander Dean Hickman, was later destroyed by Murray (four rounds).
McAllister has obviously improved since Hickman outscored him in a six-rounder in Walsall in 2003, with 20 straight wins, including a nine-round stoppage of Glasgow's Craig Docherty and a 12-round decision over former European title challenger Mihaita Mutu in two of his last three outings. However, the 26-year-old pulled out of a clash with Michael Gomez earlier this year and you wonder if he is quite ready to be let off the leash. McAllister is quick, busy and awkward - a mover - but he lacks power, and Murray does have real snap in his work. Plus, McAllister is used to fighting in front of passionate support in his home city of Aberdeen. Now the boot is on the other foot in Murray's own Lancashire.
All in all, one sides with the relentless champion.
