Rick, He died some years back.

Frank, in 2000 I spoke with a boxer who trained at Westminster and he said that Noe was training kids there. It seems like yesterday that I had that conversation, however, it was nine years ago. Thanks for the information.

The Weaver family produced some big hitters, including Mike and his triplet brothers who fought as middleweights in the 80's & 90's. Unfortunatly, all were a bit weak in the chin.

When I first saw this photo I thought it was Ronnie Harris. But then I noticed the Henry Grooms stable caption and the only one I could think of was Len Hutchins. Both fighters wore the large 'fro. This is starting to annoy me now. Who is this?

Yeah, I think you're very, very warm, Dan (if not bang on the nail). At first I thought it might be Willie Taylor, the Bronx fighter who Conteh fought. "Tap Tap" Harris also came to mind. Then I remembered an article on prospects from Kalamazoo (spelling) and Coverson and co. came to mind.

LET THE LEAVES FALL WHERE THEY MAY

"Just sweep out in the front."
Jose ,the maintance guy was opening up the gym . The fighters weren't due to arrive for another hour. I wanted to help him set up the place.
"Don't you want me to sweep off those leaves under that tree at the curb?"
"Unless the wind blows them by the door ,it's OK where they are,"said Jose.
Jose Valdez used to be a fighter. In fact I saw him fight many times. He fought at the Coliseum and Tijuana. He was on many of the cards. The only time I saw him in a main event is when he fought Bobby Valdez,no relation,to a draw. It was a bit of an upset. Bobby had the betters with him that night,but Jose fought him tough. Jose wasn't the most polished fighter in the ring,but the guy had only one gear. Forward.He was a little bull. Barrell chest. Short arms. He'd load up with everything. He telegraphed it,but if his opponent slowed down he was on the receiving end of some terrific blows.
"Hey Rog,you still painting?"
"Yep. I struggle at it."
"How about painting a picture of me?"
"I'd be honored."
"I'm kidding. Painting my mug would be a horror story."
Jose's face had shown the stories of his fights. Scar tissue,broken nose. Mishapen and beautifull.

Jose liked working around the gym. Once in a while he'd be asked to work a corner. Run errands. Anything to keep a hand in it. He wanted to train a prospect,but Jose was way down in the pecking order to work with any good talent. However,he didn't brood about it.

"I'm done sweeping. Anything else?"
"Not for now. When the boy's arrive,I'll think of something."
Jose wore the same outfit everyday. White T shirt and brown khaki pants. He sure looked like a bulldog.
"Remember the fight with Bobby Valdez?"
"How could I forget."
"I thought you won that night."
"It was a close fight. I have no regrets."
"Too bad they couldn't have gotten you something big after that."
Jose was replacing a light bulb that had burned out in the corner of the gym.
"I wasn't connected."
"You deserved something better."
"Yes,but that was in the past."

Jose had replaced the light. Everything was in order now for when the fighters arrived. He lit a cigarette.
"If I didn't keep this place up,things would go to hell."
He took a long drag. The smoke trickled from his nostrils.

The fighters would arrive soon. They knew everything would be in order. They liked Jose ,but I thought sometimes they took him for granted. Jose finished his smoke.
"You sure there's nothing else you want me to do?"
"No,everything is set up."
"How about the leaves under that tree?"
"They're all right. They belong there."

I thought about that last sentence. I looked outside at the tree and the leaves that had fallen under it. I thought when I got back hame,I might try to paint a picture of it.

When I posted the image I didn't think it was Floyd Mayweather myself. In the article it mentions the prospects in Groom's stable as Len Hutchins, Vonzell Johnson, Greg Coverson, Al Fracker, Richard Rozelle, Milton Seward and Forrest Winchester.

(Frank, There was a short biography about Henry Clark a few pages back and then some discussion as to if the picture of him against Norton was actually him so here is a couple of pictures of Henry from the 70's)





Henry was one of the nicest guys in San Francisco boxing, always dressed like he was going to a ball and carried a swagger stick. He worked as a carpenter during the day at the American Can Company, very talkative and always had a handshake and one liner for you. He really like the bit of notoriety that came with his boxing status. He was a very elusive boxer which often led to a boring fight and he could make a good fighter look bad.

Ray Cote, Butte welterweight, was born in the mining city on August 9, 1915, where he made his home, with the exception of two years spent on a horse ranch north of Edmonton, Canada.

He gained a 10-round victory over Midnight Bell; a 10-round decision over Chief Ballard, knockouts against Frankie Monroe, Bud Tibbetts and R.J. Lewis of Denver; and went a 10-round draw with Otto Blackwell. Although outweighed 10 pounds he won a 8-round victory over Larry Kellum. In this bout Cote, who was a great body puncher, had Kellum down three times and broke three of Kellum's ribs in the encounter.

Cote also had an 8-round victory over tough Billy Lancaster, a win and a draw against Roy Quackley, and an 8-round draw with Johnny Marques. Cost lost one 10-rounder to Jackie Burke at Salt Lake City, always seeking for a revenge.

I remember my first time with the opposite sex wasn't that good either. The only thing was,that took about eight seconds. This posting thing took about eight hours. One thing in common:I like both. Rog
