MY HAPPINESS
"So how much longer are you going to put up with this?
"Probably four more years,"I said.
Dora, the school counselor, and me were sitting in the staff lounge eating lunch.
"You could retire now," she said.
"Sure, but I take my grandaufgter and grandson to Spain every year so they can study Flamenco at the academy."
"You're a good grandpa,"she said.
"They enjoy it. So does my wife."
"What do you and your wife do there mostly?"
"Watch them dance and play the guitar. Sometimes it's all day."
"Do you get tired of it?"
"No. We take in the sites, but watching them perform is the purpose of the vacation. We've made a lot of friends at the academy. Dance teachers. Students. Amanda and Adam are the youngest and the only Americans."
"It must be expensive."
"It is.That's why I'm going another four more.Figure by then they'll break out on their own. Everything is paid off .The cars. The condo. The house in Michoacan.Only big expense is the trip to Spain."
Then it's you and your wife off to Mexico?"
"That's it."
"And the grandchildren?"
"Oh I figure one day I'll be getting a call from them saying they're on tour. Perhaps performing in Paris."
"And?"
"Amanda will say,'Abuelito I have airfare and tickets for you and abuelita to see me and Adam perform."
"They'll be that good some day?"
"I wouldn't be working here another four more years if I didn't think so".

Rob . . . I don't recall seeing this one before, however, it's one that deserves being featured more than once. This clip is truly "Classic American West Coast Boxing." Seeing Carol Steindler & Johnny Ortiz in their younger days? They'd both be happy to know that somebody still cares. As for the sibling boxers, we all know that "Kiko" Bejines lost his life in the Olympic Auditorium ring to our friend, Albert Davila. He paid the ultimate price in his quest for a World title. Rest his soul.
Thanks for the memories!

That's what I needed . The voice of Keely Smith. She sang with the best of them. Louie Prima was the big draw ,I guess, but Keely Smith could sing beautifully.
Prima was such a c--- hound that their marraige couldn't last. Almost destroyed Keely, and her career.
One time ,years ago,I was at the Dunes with my wife. Louie Prima and Sam Butera and the Witnesses were playing in the lounge. Louie was on fire with Butera and and his gang throwin' gasoline on everything. Dean Martin was performing in the showroom that night. He comes strollin' through the lounge.
"Hey "goombadil" ,"yells Louie at Dino.
Martin gets up on the stage and they do an hour together. Just like that. Best entertainment ,I'd ever seen in Vegas, and for free!!

What an unexpected treat, Rog. We in the entertaiment industry see and hear things about celebrities. Sometimes what you hear is surprising, shocking, disappointing. I've heard a lot about Dean Martin over the years from friends, family and associates of Dino. Not one bad word have I ever heard about Dean Martin, or Elvis, or Sinatra. All did their fair share of movies and TV productions, over and above the great music. All were men's men and ladies men. All had class, were generous and made themselves a "part of the crew".
These were the words of my grandfather who worked with them all. My grandfather did the lighting on the original "Ocean's 11", starring the Rat Pack. He also did another Rat Pack film, "Robin and the Seven Hoods". Today, my mother has the gold cigarette lighter that Sinatra gave my grandfather after they wrapped, "Ocean's 11".
It's engraved: "Thanks Roy . . . Frank, Dean, Sammy, Joey and Peter"

Boxrec. Record Change request . . .
Boxrec has an inaccurate record regarding the Dwight Hawkins-Aurileo Muniz bout held in Tampico, Mexico in 1967. Boxrec. lists Muniz winning a 10 rd. decision over Hawkins. Incorrect.
The bout didn't go ten rounds. Dwight Hawkins knocked out Aurileo Muniz in the 7th round. When the ref finished counting "ten" over the unconcious Mexican featherweight champ, Hawkins' happy manager Johnny Flores climbed thru the ropes with Dwight's robe tucked under his arm. Muniz's corner lifted their fighter to his stool. There seems some confusion at ringside and when the ring announcer grabs the mike . . . he declares Muniz the winner on disqualification. They cited that Flores had "entered the ring prior to the decision being announced." That's what happens in Mexico and it wasn't the first time for Hawkins. Flores protests to the Mexican officials and a few days later they declare the match a "draw".
The "official" result is a "draw", not a "win" for Muniz. The "actual" result was Hawkins by KO rd. 7. I know this to be true, I heard it from Flores, read of the reversal, and how Hawkins got screwed regardless of the change. However, to keep things "official", I believe Boxrec. needs to adjust the result of the fight. It's an undeserved loss on the record of of a great Southern Cal featherweight contender. A "draw" isn't correct, however, it's "official" and less of an insult to Hawkins. One day, a historian will look up Dwight Hawkins' record. Let's not lead them astray.
I appreciate Boxrec for all it provides to the world of boxing. Thanks.

Rick:
That same thing happened to the great Henry Armstrong and right here in the good old U.S.A. back in the dark ages of the Golden Era at a whistle stop called Pismo Beach. In a close bout with a newcomer from the Philippines (Kid Moro), Henry was awarded the decision as all hell broke out among a hugely partisan crowd that soon turned into a frenzied mob, according to press reports.
An intimidated official then declared the bout a draw, but as soon as everyone was out of earshot the win for Henry was reinstated. As far as I know, and I have not checked this out recently, that draw verdict has been made to stand through the years. The two men fought again, a draw bout in Stockton, if memory serves.
