effects of 3 X 3 min rds.

Other than conditioning what other factors do you feel the 3 X 3 minute rds will effect in amateur boxing?

It gives the boxer more time to get into a rhythm and work on strategy.

Boxers who can think on their own and adjust their style based upon what the opponent is doing or not doing will benefit from the 3x3 format. The coaches have one less rest period to give instructions. They can try to "coach" during the round.

I know a lot of gyms that regularly spar 3 minute rounds at all ages/weights. Open class boxers that come from those systems will also have an advantage as they are used to the time and using their 'gas tanks' effectively, IMO.

a bit of a side note . . . if AIBA ever goes back to 4-2min rounds, it is a good idea to spar/train for 3 minute rounds. during the precompetition and early competition phases it's ideal to BUILD conditioning with 3 min rounds. then use 2 minute rounds to MAINTAIN just before peaking. when giving 100% conditioning, you can maintain by knocking down intesity or duration to 60%. its easier to take duration from 3min to 2 min than it is to reduce sparring intensity.

When I first became involved, 3-3's were required, so they are nothing new. 4-2's or 3-3's are the same in minutes (11) but I imagine 3-3's gives a bit more time to actually think about what to do.

When I thought of the question I did not realize that the change may alter the officials perspective as well. Thank you for the enlightenment. :DDD

Groan! My comment had nothing to do with an "official's perspective." You are too funny, Ron! :DD

Many of us were boxers when it was 3 x 3 in the past. It has now come full circle and is back to the 3x3's.
