I think we stand a good chance in the Ashes but I fear that if Oz can find a bit of form, we're toast. They're short of a decent spinner (they obviously don't want to stick with Krezja and the jury's out on Hauritz), a quality seamer (though Siddle had a good game in the last test) and an opener (unless Hayden can remember how to bat).

There is no way that any team can simply replace the likes of Warne, McGrath and Gilchrist but I wouldn't put is past them to beat South Africa in their return rubber before the Ashes.

BBC cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew said he had been told by an ECB spokesman that Pietersen and Moores had not tendered their resignations.

He told Radio 5 Live: "The ECB confirmed to me that no resignations have been offered or accepted.

"Further board meetings have taken place following the one last night, which I understand concluded with the agreement that both Pietersen and Moores would be sacked.

"Andrew Strauss is likely to be named as Pietersen's successor."
