Confusion over Kell Brook v Stuart Elwell 30 January

Post by salvador »

Sorry if this has been discussed already, but a few weeks ago the BBBC refused Mark Lloyd as a challenger for Kell Brook's British title on the grounds he wasn't suitable an opponent. Stuart Elwell has now been confirmed as Lloyd's replacement. How on earth is Elwell any better then Lloyd!!??

Not sure of that one either. Seems a somewhat limit opponent for a British title challenge.

But does this mean he deserves a crack at the British Title? His two bouts before that were stoppage losses.

No disrespect to Stuart Elwell, but it is getting a bit depressing that Sports Notwork are putting on main events of this quality. Compare this to eg Simpson V Truscott , which is simply... better.

Crap - I watched Elwell against that Ukrainian (whatever he was) and he looked horrible. His record isn't much better too.

God, I hate Franky Warren.

This isnt a good match up but brook can only fight who ever is in front of him.

Elwell has only lost 3times to o'donnell, ted bami and the ukrainian who is 28 and o with 20 ko's which was for the wba inter-continental welter title.

Burns is VERY limited. He is a big man with a long jab but no real power and he has no clue what to do when under pressure or fighting on the inside.

Elwell looks a tough little fighter who would give anyone a tough fight to further a fighters progression. There is no real danger to Brook here but it gets him back in the ring and hopefully Warren will move him on after a couple (or three) title defences.

I like the BBBof C and respect a lot of their decisions, but this has just gone from bad to worse.

Wonderful opportunity for Elwell, but completely undeserved in a division laiden with talent and better contenders.

SN standards are as low as they are allowed to be and this affair proves it.

Depends on the definition or losing run - he is 1-2 in his last 3, for me that represents more defeats than wins in his recent form.

When we had all the controvesy of Brook being named mandatory to McIntyre without having fought an eliminator (I know its not his fault) I said there was about 20 fighters who were worthy of fighting in an eliminator, even if it was just to prove Brook was beyond English title level.

Elwell was at the lower end of the 20, now he gets a shot at the British title! Another sign that Warren simply cannot deliver... I mean its gone from Hall to Elwell, does he have no faith in Brook?

Brook looks a really good prospect, but I think Frank is worried about that chin.

Elwell, at best, is a fringe English-title contender.

kells only ever touched down once in this boxing life ams and pro and that was a flash knock down because he was off balance. the guy that made him touch down (karl david) has a pretty good ko percentage.

think this is just to get him back in the ring and keep him fresh just after the christmas period. there will be better defences to come this year.

I agree with THEBUTCH on this one. If it was a division void of talent then we could sort of understand this move, but that is simply not the case. Elwell is capable but this isn't top of the bill material for a Friday fight night unless they are planning a strong support bout.

On a sidenote, I read recently that there is a concern over Brook not being the cleanest living fighter around. A bit of an "indulger" perhaps. Any substance (excuse the pun) to this?

I think kell will stop him in about 8 rounds. Hopefully he fights again in April against Lomax or Watson or HAtton.

Well, OK, but this IS a British title fight, not an undercard 8 rounder!

Yeah, it is possible they have a really strong support bill planned, but lets be honest- it is somewhat unlikley.

And here is some news from the Undercard !

Richard Horton V some guy called (Tony?) Salam for the Southern area super middleweight belt.

Sounds like a decent undercard scrap, but perhaps not quite "main support" standard?

Also on the card are Derek Chisora and Vinny Mitchell, opponents TBC.

Kell Brook now defends his British welterweight title against Midlander Stuart Elwell at York Hall on January 30. Elwell replaces stablemate Mark Lloyd, who was rejected last month as a viable challenger by The Board.
Ironically, Elwell has a similar record to Lloyd's at 12-3 (1) but he holds a stunning first-round win over Darlington's Francis Jones, who challenged for the British welterweight title in 2007 against then holder Kevin Anderson and went into the 12th round, and that win alone commands respect. Elwell is strong, fit and determined, an ex-army man from Walsall, a southpaw. He comes off a solid decision over previously unbeaten Scot Paul Burns in Glasgow in November (six rounds) but was stopped in seven rounds by Brixton's dangerous and experienced Ted Bami last July, who got to him with body shots. Ominously, Brook goes well to the body.
Elwell's other defeats came to good men John O'Donnell (pts 10 for the English title) and Ukrainian puncher Vyacheslav Senchenko (two rounds, in the Ukraine). O'Donnell also seemed to rattle Stuart with body shots, although it was always competitive.
Brook, by some contrast, brings a flawless 18-0 (11) tab and great potential at still only 22, nine years younger than the challenger. The muscled Sheffield youngster ventured to Glasgow and came through a stiff-looking test against mandatory challenger Kevin McIntyre of Paisley two months ago. It took him 120 seconds, and McIntyre is a southpaw like Elwell. Brook had won the British title by dismantling rangy Welshman Barrie Jones in seven rounds last summer at York Hall - another southpaw. He has stopped seven of his last eight opponents.
Fluid, smooth, impassive and heavy handed, Brook is one of the most avoided fighters in domestic boxing and looks much too much for the gritty, gutsy Elwell.
