THE IMPRESSARIO

Iganacio Huizar put everthing together down there when there was a card. All the venues:The bull ring, race track, auditiorium, the Arena 72,and the Jai Lai Palace. All the fights went through him. Even when it was on the big screen,Huizar had his name on it.

He was kind of a portly guy. Dressed nice. There was plenty of action across the border then. Not the drugs, and drug lords killing each other like now. Lots of good fights. Lots of crazy joints afterwards . Plenty of food all over town. It was fun. Yes it was a time that town will never see again.

I can't remember the fight, but I wanted to get my tickets early. Trying to wrestle your way to the ticket window the night of the fight was a struggle. Besides the pick pockets made a living off the bugs sqeezing their way to the window. At the bottom of the fight posters that were nailed all over town was the address of Huizar's restaurant if you wanted to buy your ducats early.

A few days before the fight I was in TJ. It was getting dark and it was cold. Beginning to drizzle. I thought I'd hurry over to Huizar's eatery to by my ticket. The place was somewhere south of the old bull ring, but for the life of me,I couldn't pin it down. I must have driven by it a dozen times, but I kept missin' it. Finally I pull over. I'll ask a cab driver.

"Donde esta restaurant Huizar?",I ask a cab driver standing beside a lamp post.
He tells me I 'm right in front of it. A little store front that has a sign that read "Tacitos". There was a counter inside with about 5 or 6 stools. A card table with four chairs. So I walk inside. The place is empty. Nobody behind the counter.
"Los boletos de box?"
I ask if this is where I could by the tickets for the fights. Out from the back comes out this stout little guy with a thin mustache. Huizar.
"Si amigo,"he says. "Quieres un boleto?"
I bought a ticket.
"Enjoy the fight amigo,"said Huizar.

He didn't introduce himself. Why should he? I knew who he was though. One of the biggest and wealthiest promoters in Mexico. And here he was in his little taco shop. Probably felt that was enough for him. All those big shots down there have a front that's modest like a little taco shop. Unassuming. Perhaps they own a bay front mansion in Acapulco, but something like a little taco shop to make them feel at home ia a gimme'.

I got in the car. It was dark now. Hell,I wonder if the tacos were any good?

Question for Frank . . .

I've read of Rudy Garcia several times on this thread. Frank, I wonder if you remember if the same Rudy Garcia sponsored a Junior Amateur show in 1967, at a Hod Carrier's Union Hall in Santa Ana? I forget all who were there, but the usual L.A. Jr's. I beat Claud Durden for the second time and remember that Dwight Hawkins brought a team from Watts that he coached. Might be another Rudy Garcia. His name was on my trophy.

Not the same one, Rick, the Rudy Garcia from Santa Ana worked with my cousin Tony Adame in staging Jr. fights in Santa Ana.

That's a great one! One of my favorites to date, Roger. I see Louis wearing the yellow sweater. One of the things I appreciate most about your art is the choice of colors. For some crazy reason, that yellow sweater really strikes me as Joe Louis.

Frank, as you know Paul Armstead and Eddie Pace crossed over from Hap's era to the next. Frankie Belma gave it another try himself in the mid-60's, fighting out of the Jackie McCoy stable. I recall watching Belma on TV from the Olympic during those early Dick Enberg-Mickey Davies broadcasts on KTLA Ch-5. I remember during the match that Davies mentioned that Belma had fought Art Aragon years earlier. I have a clear picture in my mind of Frankie Belma, he held his left hand low and would keep it in motion, feinting, pumping the jab. In 1970, Eddie Pace would drop dead in the ring at Shagrue's Hoover St. Gym after a sparring session with welter Gil King.

Thanks for the great list. I look forward to Hap's memories.

-Rick Farris
You're right Rick, some of those fighters on my list did fight into the 60's, some might have fought into the early 1970's.

Dave Gallardo who is on that list is going to be inducted into the CBHOF this year.

Thanks for answering a question that has been stuck in the back of my mind for decades. Everytime I saw the name Rudy Garcia in relation to boxing, my mind would think of the name on that trophy.

Last time I saw these three champions together was at the 2006 WBHOF autograph signing session, at the Airport Marriott Hotel the morning of the annual banquet. I was with Dan Hanley and we were doing some "on-the-spot" video interviews with a few of the Hall of Famers.

Dan and I hoped to corner Duran, who would be inducted into the HOF later that evening. However, Roberto was surrounded by reporters, admiring fans and just about everybody else aware of his presence. Dan and I opted to wait for a better opportunity, and turned our attention towards Matthew saad Muhammed and Yaqui Lopez.

As we moved around the room with our camerman Greg Patterson, we'd grab a boxer and I'd set up the shot, Dan would tap into his brilliant memory of the boxer's career and the interview would begin. We were just having fun and seeing what we might come up with. As we scanned the room for potential interviews, we saw three of our all time favorites, standing side-by-side posing for pictures. All were three were holding their legendary fists out toward the camera, and the flash bulbs popped, providing a light show as the champions smiled.

Gonzalez, Napoles and Duran. I couldn't help but imagine what might have happened had any of these three fought one another. Napoles-Duran, a pick 'em match? Gonzalez-Duran? Gonzalez-Napoles? The undisputed winners of such match-ups would be the fans. These guys came to fight, and nobody did it better.

The following year, we ended up getting "El Gato" in our studio for an emotional interview. Duran was a "no show" in 2007. Maybe we'll get Napoles this year, and if Duran is there, we will not allow the opportunity to escape us as it did in 2006.

By the way, I'm in the process of finally editing the studio interviews that Dan Hanley and I did in 2007. When they are ready for a "rough draft" viewing, I'll see if I can some how link them to this thread.

-Rick Farris
Sad to say I heard that Napoles is a bit addled now, and failed to recognize and (for several minutes) remember Emile Griffith at a recent function. That's hearsay, and I hope the information was incorrect.

Frank, I remember Kenny Davis Sr. the former fighter/ref and his sons, although I've never met any of them. The names on Gallardo's record are a "who's who" of some of the best of the era. I enjoy scanning such records because of the names I'll find. Often tucked away between unknowns, a name such as "Salas" will jump out. The names so often intersect, forming pieces of the puzzle. Thanks to Hap and Frank for helping us fit those pieces together. The pictures you two paint of L.A. boxing history are as vivid in my mind as that yellow sweater Joe Louis is wearing in the portrait Dagos just painted.

Frank . . . I forgot what a great record Mark Davis had put together. One thing that always surprises me is seeing a record such as Mark's and wonder how he could go 13-0 (8 KO's) and then quit after one 10 rd. dec. loss to Adrian Arreola? He never stepped back into a pro ring? I never could understand how one loss could ruin a fighter? The best lessons are sometimes learned thru a loss. Real fighters deal with their losses, as well as their wins. In fact, I prefer to see how a kid reacts to adversary . . . knockdowns, KO losses, a serious ass-whipping?

A fighter has to be able to get over things, especially themselves!

Rick, I now remember Mark's brother Ken Jr., I knew Mark better then Ken Jr. and I alway got the impression that he didn't really wanted to fight, the impression I got was that he was doing it because his dad wanted him to fight. not a good reason to fight.... :witzend:

Right here Frank. I've been putting in a lot of hours at work. Sometimes it takes it's toll on me. I was on a self imposed break. There's been a lot of good stuff since I was last on. This thread is the best!

Weaver never pushed on as heavyweight champion, winning the title in 1980 but making just a couple of defences before Mike Dokes relieved him of the belt in about 80 seconds in late 1982. That was a waste.
If my memory serves me right. This fight was stopped too soon. As I recall Dokes was throwing a lot of punches that either missed or landed on Weaver's arms. He didn't appear to be hurt. The ref, I don't recall who it was, stopped the fight needlessly.

Randy . . . I understand long hours and how it can interfere with our posting. I was in the same position as you a month ago, however, I have a couple more weeks off and I'm taking advantage of the time to catch up with this fast moving history machine.

I would like make a suggestion to all of us who are regulars and that is to copy this thread and put it on a seperate disc. What if something were to wipeout all this great information? It happened before on another great thread in another on-line forum. I think I'll lift this info just in case.
