What Happen IF There was Marvin Hagler vs. Iran Barkley

Post by kovit »

What happen if Marvin Hagler was defending his title before fighting Sugar Ray Leonard after beating John "The Beast" Mugabi by defending it against Iran "The Blade" Barkley? Will Hagler fighting Barkley into an interesting fight or Barkley would be just another victim of the the Marvelous onslaught? How much odds would Hagler win the fight against Barkley.

One question was how long is Barkley's arms in reach? I knew Barkley stood at 6 foot 1 inches tall and how long is Barkley's arms in reach? Please help me and find out.

Interesting matchup - Barkley had that impressive desperation KO of Hearns, but I think Hagler is too cool, too good defensively and has too good a chin for Barkley to KO him (the only way Barkley wins that fight, IMO), but with a banger like Barkley there was always a chance he might land a bomb. But I just donlt think he could take out a prime Hagler - the Marvelous one by KO (in a Hagler/Hearns-style slugfest) or UD.

Fight I would have loved to have seen.

Can't help you with the reach question, but check out Barkley's weight over the years - looks like losing to Benn was to Barkley like losing to Jones was to Toney. He did get to 168 one final time vs. Toney in '93, (but was completely drained at the weight ), but shot up to over 200 after that - maybe Toney gave him some advice on nutrition. ;) The Blade had one last fling with near-middleweight weights in '94 vs. Maske (probably badly drained for that fight), and then just porked out and finished his career fighting heavies. He won the (this is so important it deserves italics) Vacant WBB Heavyweight Title from a 40something Gerrie Coetzee in '97 (even today, Coetzee's ring nickname still cracks me up - there's something hilariously onanistic about it), so I guess you could say he won world titles in 4 weightclasses, from middle to heavyweight.

I loved watching Iran Barkley. I remember seeing Hagler's half-brother, Robbie Simms, KO Barkley in a slugfest early in their careers, and a great fight between Barkley and Mike Tinley. Both of those fights could have gone either way. To me, Barkley is in the same class as Tinley and Simms as a fighter--except he had a huge heart. He made the most of his skills, and Barkley was never in a dull fight that I can remember. I would have loved to have seen a fight between "the Blade" and Hagler. I think Hagler's skills were such that a limited slugger like Barkley would probably never land a clean punch on the chin, but if he did manage to catch Marvin with his best punch, I don't see it doing much more than causing irritation. Barkley had a decent punch--not a great one--and heart heart heart, but Hagler would bust him up, take him apart, and stop him in the middle or, if the ref lets it go as long as possible, in the later rounds.

Consensus on this one is entertaining fight that could end any time - don't take a leak - but MMH takes him. What's the over/under on this one? Maybe 3 or 4?

Tough, exciting fight, but Hagler takes him apart with his greater skills and more accurate punching, and wins either by decision or late stoppage.

In Barkley's prime he survives the distance but that's it. Not a close fight (two of the meanest looking dudes ever)
Barkely would not go the distance with Hagler.

Within six rounds he would have looked like the contents of a slaughterhouse.

Hagler wins easy.

Similar to his win over Wilford Scypion.

Hagler wins by KO5 in a entertaining fight.

Hagler is a class above Barkley IMO.

If the scenario is, as Kovit put it, 1987, I tend to believe that Barkley would make it to the final rounds. Hagler by late stoppage is my choice.

Prime Hagler? Yes, Hagler in 4-5 rds.

Hagler would have k.o.ed Barkley in the 5 or 6 round. I know the blade & he's a cool person, but Hagler would b a bit 2much 4 Barkley.
