....former ABA Heavyweight Champion Harold Hylton from the 1980’s.

I met him last night and I’m likely to bump into him a bit more. I remember watching him but don’t really recall that much other than he was a regular in the ABA Heavyweight finals for quite a few years.

Does anyone remember much about Harold like his style of fighting, who he fought, etc?

Or are there any good amateur sites which list things like ABA finalists and results?

Don't mention Horace Notice to him. Notice flattened him in a round in the 1983 ABA heavyweight final (and I mean flattened him). Canadian sensation Willie DeWitt also did him in a round in the 1982 Commonwealth Games final in Brisbane. But the big Gloucester man could fight. He won two ABA finals himself.

Thanks Bennie. Harold said he beat Notice in the '82 final and thought he could do it again the following year.

DeWitt is about the only result I could remember. I asked Harold about him and he said he knew nothing about DeWitt before the final!! He had no idea DeWitt was a touted golden boy who had been mixing with the Cubans and Americans.

Harold was a typical laid back West Indian and lacked that extra devil in his work to win him the really big fights. In the first fight with Notice in 1982, he got a break when he tagged his man with a left hook and Notice, who was backed on the ropes, slipped down due to the narrow ring apron (it sounds a ludicrous thing to say, but I was at the ABA finals that year and, from first final to last, fighters were losing their footing due to the non-existent apron). When Notice got up, the referee stopped it! But Harold was bossing Notice and looked the business that year till DeWitt burst his bubble.
I've got some of his fights on tape, Lamphey. I'll try and sort something out.
