Does your partner like boxing

Post by jayc »

Hey guys, just out of curiosity, but do your respective partners like or hate boxing.
I'm quite lucky as my girlfriend makes an effort to take an interest in big fights despite the fact she doesn't really love the spam. She does have an unhealthy crush on Michael Buffer though! She is supportive about the fact that im out training 4 nights a week as well!

On a side note.
Is it just mine or is every gym absolutely packed at the moment?
I remember 5-10 years ago and some gyms were like ghost towns - now you can hardly move.
I'm not complaining, think it's huge for british boxing and can only be a good thing.

My wife loves to watch the big fights, her favourite is Joe Calzaghe. I wouldnt call her a boxing fan though, she doesnt have a lot of interest in British area titles. I tell her these lads have to start somewhere and any title is some achievment. I then point out in a year or so you could see the same lad win the Lonsdale belt. She loves the Lonsdale belt and thinks its the best looking belt of them all. My wife also likes Michael Buffer, not a bad looking guy for 64. Actually amateur boxing is doing pretty well so local gyms should be doing OK. Its the pro game that has lost a lot of support over the years. Also a lot of lads take up boxing to keep fit, Clinton Woods did and found he was a lot better than most and made a career out of it.

Nope!!! - in all the shows she could have come to - she would rather go out with mates and get p*ssed or have a giggle.

She has met Clinton Woods and Ricky Hatton at a party a week after Clintons fight against Gonzalez - and the only other show she came to was an Army Boxing Charity Dinner evening I help organise and thats only because Clinton, Dennis and Richard attended and she likes them all - ffs she needs another eye test!!!

She will watch sometimes and only sometimes if me and my lad are at a show to see if she can see us but thats it!!!

My missus likes the big fights and comes to quite a few that I attend.
Some of the stuff she comes out with is funny but can add an interesting laymans perspective.
Eg: I took her to an Ian napa fight at York hall and she couldn’t take it seriously as she claimed I’d taken her to midget fighting. It never occurred to me at all because I guess we are used to the x established divisions, but I suppose the fact is I’d taken her to watch two extremely small men fight.

A tip: If you have a flutter, cut her into half the potential winnings. This gets the interest up. I was able to watch Mosley-Mayorga on the Sun am rather than Hollyoaks or whatever as I’d promised to split the winnings on a 7-1 punt on Mayorga. Bad call in the end but she got into it big time.

I brought her just once, the fight was terrible, a real mis-match against an experienced fighter and a novice.

After the fight I told her, she wont have to box me again.

Did'nt you just see that coming............. she didnt!

My wife tolerates it and seems to enjoy the big event world class action fights but i was never sure if she was just humouring me as it's one of the few things i get excited about.
I took her on a 3 week boxing binge in November - Calzaghe v Jones then Haye v Barrett then Hatton v Malignaggi. She was flagging by the end and refused to sit through the entire undercard with me but if she can put up with that i'm taking that as a yes.

My wife makes me laugh with her comments like "who is Hatton playing this time" and "is this Floyd Merryweather any good".

My missus enjoys a slugfest (until there's blood) but as soon as there's a close to technical match up she thinks it's boring!

She really enjoyed Calzaghe v Jones because both of them were showboating

The ex I had when I was fighting was a nightmare, moaned bout me watching it, didn't like me training as she got lonely, would tell me I looked stupid if I had a bit of stubble/a goatie b4 a fight, used to wake me up crying in the middle of the night before a fight because because she felt shut out as my mind wasn't centred on her in the run up to the fight.
She couldn't understand why I got nervous as I was always all right after a fight, so for that reason she never worried about me being bashed up.
I remember once I was criticised on the telly for fighting negatively( I dislocated my thumb in the 1st and fiddled my way around for the rest of the 4 rounder) she was on the mobile as soon as I was in the changing room having a right go at me as it made her look bad! It was also my 5th fight in 6 weeks just b4 xmas and she had spent heavy.
She hated me fighting but wanted the dough.
In the end I used to go 2 my parents a couple of hundred miles away for a few days before a fight.
