Inaccurate Ring Names
I think the most inappropriate, inaccurate, ring name for a fighter I can recall is "Iron" Mike DiBiase, the stepfather of the "Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase. He wasn't so tough as his name implied, losing to Archie Moore easily and one sidedly in three rounds, in what was to be Moore's last bout as a professional boxer.
Btw, does this little bit of history exist on film?

I've never seen it, but I saw it with my own eyes!

How old were you when you saw that fight Buzz ?
Re: Inaccurate Ring Names
Rumors of my advanced age a bit exaggerated. I was 12 I believe and I saw it with my Dad and my guitar teacher at Madison Square Garden in my home town of Phoenix....Here is a pic of it! They tore it down a few years ago...

Re: Inaccurate Ring Names
The most innacurrate ring name in history is "Irish" Leroy Haley

,,,boxbuzzy's contempt for his peers is illustrated by his saying he saw this with his own eyes, thinking if he didn't say that we would be so stupid we'd think he might have seen it with his own earlobes or armpits.

Meldrick "TNT" Taylor. He had some decent pop, it's true, but, "TNT!?" Not likely. "The Kid" was a more fitting name, referring to his speed, but it was lesser-used.

I guess I need to explain the definition of the word, 'often' nowoliverfennell wrote:vs Mason, McCrory, Biggs, Ruddock, Fortune, Morrison, Golota, Briggs, Grant, Botha, Rahman II, Tyson, Klitschko...Goodnight, Irene wrote:We didn't often see, "The Lion" in Lennox Lewis.
Would you classify Lewis' typical style as lion-esque? No? Then my statement stands.
Re: Inaccurate Ring Names
..there was a lesser known african-american prelim boxer....named irish joe kelly. he often fought way down in the 4-6 rounders on cards headed by 0akland billy smith. i saw him fight a few times. he was a dirty fighter and not a good one and the irish in the crowd pointed out he was a black guy and the blacks in the crowd reminded everyone that he used an irish nickname. i think he was one of wallace " bud" smith's very early opponents. smith knocked him cold early.
a nickname i've always felt was wrong was "sugar ray" leonard. i'm not knocking him as a fighter but he was in no way comparable to the REAL sugar ray.

Re: Inaccurate Ring Names
I guess you would judge, "Sugar Shane" pretty harshly, then? He's patently the weakest of those three to incorporate the moniker.
Re: Inaccurate Ring Names
.....goodnight..yes indeed. in his first fight on television those clowns that announce boxing cards were already comparing him to the real sugar ray. i don't know if they are the ones to blame the moniker on and he just picked it up, or if he and his management were the first.. either way, it doesn't fit.
george costner started calling him sugar and the real sugar got upset, saying he was he only one who was going to use that in front of his name and when they fought robby kayoed costner ( a good fighter) in the first round. they fought again later and, again, ray knocked him out in the first round.
i'd love to see him plow through the more recent users.

Re: Inaccurate Ring Names
What would he think of Sugar Ray Seales?
Actually, according to Mosley (in a Magazine interview), the nick comes from his childhood, & he carried it through to his boxing career, when seeing its relevance to the sport's history.

Re: Inaccurate Ring Names
He wasn't in the same class as any of the other "sugars" mentioned, but Sugar Ray Seales was a good fighter. Early in his career he even had a draw with Marvin Hagler. If he wouldn't have gone blind he may have had an even better career.
Another "Sugar" that was good was Sugar Ramos. He was at about the same level as "Sugar" Shane Mosley.
