Has anybody heard how former top USA referee Mills Lane is since his stroke? It must be about 12 months since I heard anything.

Mills Lane is scheduled to leave the United States next week to undergo stem cell injections at a Ukrainian hospital to help him recover from a stroke he suffered two years ago.
Lane, 65, began receiving injections of adult stem cells taken from his own bone marrow in August, his wife, Kaye, said yesterday from the couple's apartment in New York City.
"Mills is going back for a third time to the Ukraine, where he is part of clinical research with the bone marrow-type stem cell research, and he feels grateful to be part of the beginning of this very promising medical breakthrough," she said. "There has been slight improvement so far and I am very optimistic. We should see results in three weeks."
Kaye Lane said she began using the Internet to find others to provide stem cell treatment for her husband in January 2003 after she was unable to find it in the United States.
Since then, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first clinical trial in the United States to test bone marrow stem cell therapy for severe heart failure. That trial, being conducted by the Texas Heart Institute in Houston, was approved earlier this year.
But by then, Kaye Lane already had taken her husband twice to the hospital in Kharkov, Ukraine, where doctors injected so-called "adult" or stromal stem cells first into his spine and then into his brain.
Kaye Lane said she first contacted a Pennsylvania doctor familiar with stem cell research for his opinion of the Ukrainian hospital's use of stromal cells. He told her he "felt they were medically sound."
"We have had an unbelievable journey and met the most wonderful people," Kaye Lane said. “It has made our life richer."
The doctors and staff at the hospital in Kharkov have refused payment for the treatment, she said.
"They just said they wanted to see him smile and throw a punch."
It could work, said Esmail Zanjani, a professor and chairman of the Department of Animal Biotechnology at the University of Nevada, Reno.
"There have been studies on animals that show stromal cells can produce heart cells, liver cells and cells in the brain and spinal cord," said Zanjani, who has done extensive stem cell research.
Zanjani said Mills Lane's doctors probably hope to regenerate the type of brain cells that were damaged during his stroke. He said the fact Lane’s own bone marrow is being used to create the stromal cells for his treatment "is very good because there is no rejection phenomenon. It’s an interesting approach."
Lane, once the star of the nationally syndicated television show, 'The Judge Mills Lane Show,' suffered a stroke in 2002 in his Reno home that affected his speech and the movement of his right arm.
After months of therapy following his stroke, Lane's speech and movement in his right arm improved somewhat, but his wife has been dogged in her determination for greater results, friends of the family said.
Kaye Lane said religious reasons prohibit the staff at the hospital in Kharkov from using the fetal stem cells Nancy Reagan now advocates as weapons in the battle against the Alzheimer's that took her husband and other diseases.
Lane said she briefly considered fetal stem cell treatment, but decided against it.
"There are fetal cell places in Mexico and the Caribbean," she said. "I do think if the fetuses are (not aborted) and they could save a life, it may be OK, but I didn't have any knowledge of these places and I wondered about AIDS, etc."

Thanks for the heads up Bennie, great to hear he's got some focus now. Wish him all the best. He was a great 'fan's referee'. He'll be missed.

Haha :TU:

I used to love the way he'd square up to the big heavyweights. Like in Tyson - Ruddock 2 (I think) where he starts shoving Ruddock after he refues to break, it's the expression on his face though, he was for taking him on!

Also the time he sent out Milton McCrory to meet Don Curry's right hand. McCrory could barely stand after the 1st knockdown and was prompty knocked out cold 2 seconds later with one punch. :o

I like Mills. He was ref for the first fight I paid ppv for and watched live, Tyson-Holy 2. (Class fight). I hope he recovers from his stroke.

Good work bennie but Surprised to hear of the stem cell technology he is benefiting from. That is a "morally unethical" issue.

Taking cells from the one part of the man's own body and reusing them elsewhere in his body is unethical? What do you think happens in cardiac bypass surgery? Or skin grafts for burn victims? Sounds like you didn't read the article very carefully - it specifically mentions that the hospital where he is being treated doesn't make use of fetal cells.

Yes Mills Lane has always been good value for money, Seemed the sort of bloke that didn't take crap from anybody. I'm sure I heard as a judge he had sent about 8 people to the electric chair over the years. I'm also sure that before being a judge he was a sheriff and also served in the marines.

Obviousley a man used to giving out orders and maintaining order.

"LETS GET IT ON" :TU:

Talking of Referees I always thought Mitch Halper was a promising ref but he sadly took his own life a few years ago I believe he was only about 32. Very sad. R.I.P.

It seems Mills Lane still takes an interest in Boxing, which is good to hear.

Possibly (probably) not the right time to discuss it, but does anyone else feel that Mills Lane should have shouldered a certain amount of responsibilty for the ear-biting?

Let's make it clear, I would never excuse Tyson's behaviour, but plenty of people seem to have excused Evander's liberal use of the head in that (and many other) fight(s).

Tyson drew Lane's attention to it (from memory) twice before the first bite and was told to box on.

Perhaps more culpably (in Mill's case) he ordered them to box on after the first bite, when as far as I can see the only option was to disqualify Tyson.
