New Naz in the world junior semis

Post by bennie »

Bury sensation Amir Khan is just one win away from a place in the final of the world junior championships in South Korea.
The 17-year-old lightweight - who will be Britain's only Olympic representative in Athens this summer, well-outscored Darkan Asirof of Kazakstan in the quarter-finals and is due to fight in the semis today.
This kid is looking the biz.

I'm not really in the know when it comes to amateurs, but i've been hearing a lot about Khan. What do you think his chances are of capturing Gold in Athens?

Phew. That really is asking a lot of a 17-year-old. Just a couple of good performances would be more than enough. A bronze would be exceptional.

Ture. Plus ther's the fact he's the only British boxer out there. Thats a lot of pressure

Yes indeed. That's why sticking him in the world juniors prior to the big event is a smart move. But if he wins gold in the world juniors, he'll be swamped with offers to turn pro even before Athens in August.

He's in the final– just beaten the French kid. He's clearly the best lightweight in the world at junior level.
By the way, apparently he's indifferent to being likened to Hamed. :TU:

Well he's only likened to Hamed because he's asian, it's not like he's a Yemeni, and he doesn't fight the same either, I can understand his indifference.

Does anyone on here know hot to get in touch with the little feller?

I dont think his chances for wining gold at the olympics are good. In the pre-olympics he lost 33-13 to Mario Kindelan in the first round.

Yes, but that was a win more than a loss. Kindelan is a modern great.

The hungarian Kate will also be togh to beat. He only lost 15-13 Kindelan in the final at the pre-olympics. Kate won a bronze medal at the european championships this year after losing in the semis, 34-25, to Dimitar Schtilianov from Bulgaria.

getting there in the firstnplace is an achievement in itslef, qualification is so hard. Crazy to think he's the only Brit who qualified, at such a young age.

Out of interest how good was Kevin Mitchell as an amateur. How does Khan compare skills wise?

I think we are getting a bit overexcited about Khan.

Look at Roman Greenberg, he got to the World Junior Final at 18 or 19, and whilst he's a prospect, he hasnt set the world alight.

After stopping the French kid inside a round he's now won the gold at a canter. Not bad, even if I don't mind saying so myself! :o :TU:
