Dave McAuley counterfeit shock...

One of the nicest guys ever to hold a world title, Dave "Boy" McAuley, appeared in court today charged with possessing forged banknotes.
He's also accused of passing some of the notes in a County Donegal pub.
It's exactly 15 years since McAuley won the IBF flyweight title with a one-sided points win over Duke Mckenzie in June 1989 at Wembley.
He successfully defended the title five times (an Irish record) before losing on a scandalous decision to Colombia's Rodolfo Blanco in Spain in 1992, after which he retired. In the same year, he was awarded an MBE.
Today, at Letterkenny courthouse in County Donegal, he pleaded not guilty to accusations he was carrying and passed over forged Northern Irish currency in a Letterkenny pub in the early hours of May 30.
Garda officers were called that night and McAuley was arrested and taken to Letterkenny Garda station in connection with a number of forged £20 notes.
McAuley, a 43-year-old father of two who runs a hotel in Larne in Northern Ireland, insists he didn't know the notes were counterfeit.

Shocking news indeed.

I still remember his great fights with Fidel Bassa and I also think he never gets enough credit for his KO win over 'Baby' Jake Matlala.

Sounds like he was grassed up. What a shame.

His fights with Fidel Bassa, particularly the first, were some of the greatest to have taken place on British soil.

McAuley was found guilty of proffering two £20 notes which he knew to be counterfeit at Bar Mono on Lower Main Street in Letterkenny, County Donegal.
A second charge of being in possession of counterfeit notes was withdrawn.
"The charge is not true" said McAuley in court. "I did not know the notes were counterfeit."
He said he was on a stag night in Letterkenny and was very drunk and had no idea where he got the notes. He said they could have slipped through the net in his business.
But Judge John O'Donnell said he found it hard to believe that a person who is in business could not be super-conscious of when forged notes were being passed.
He fined McCauley €600.
