Cuba Boxing Championship Started in Guantanamo

GUANTANAMO, Cuba (ACN) - Cuba’s Boxing National championship, one of the best in the world according to fans and specialists, started this Wednesday in eastern Guantanamo province.

Yordanis Ugas (64 Kg), bronze medallist in Beijing 2008, had an easy win in his debut by RSC over Orlenis Dangel in the first round. Cuba’s champion in the 57 kg division, Ivan Onate won his bout against Norlan Year won by withdrawal in the second when he was leading 12-1.

The current featherweight fighter declared he didn’t even break a sweat, even when he always fights his first combats out of distance.

Other two boxers from the easternmost Cuban province won their respective matches. They were light welter Yudenis Thaureaux (RSC-1 against Miguel Arma) and Hector Boloy, who scored 17 hits by one his opponent Gerle Solsano.

Worth mentioning was the combat between Omar Capote, from Granma, and Maikel Samon, from Holguin, won by the first one 16-13, based on pure courage, instead of technique.

Today there will be bouts in the 48, 54, 60, 69, 75 and 81 kilograms: at two PM and then at 8 in the Castiello Arena and at 7 PM in the arena located in the Manuel tames municipality.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yordenis Ugas is up at 64 kg, I guess he´s a slight favorite over Rosniel Iglesias for gold. Two other olympians have gone up one weight class: Yampier Hernandez is up at 51 kg and Idel Torriente is up at 60 kg. Veterans Andry Laffita, Yudel Jhonson, Yordanis Despaigne and Michel Lopez have all retired. Emilio Correa is still injured. World Youth champion Frank Isla was stopped in the first round (three standing eights) in his first bout.

Thanks for the info.
Are the move up in weights likely to be permanent? With these retirements and the current crop of Cubans fighting in the professionals they seem to be in a period of change.
What do you know about the superheavy Pedro Rodriguez and is Erislandi Savon ready to challenge Acosta?

Jose Angel Laurdet (81kg) destroyed all his opponents at the World Juniors, do you think he will be a contender for gold or is he still to young and inexperienced?

Many, if not most, times the kids that do well at the World Juniors/Cadets/U-17 or whatever else it is called do OK, but not great for the first year or two in the Senior Open class.

The one that surprised me is the World Youth (U-19) Champ getting stopped in the opening round of the tournament. Usually the guys that do well in the World U-19 (now called the World Youth Championships) do very well in the Men's Senior Open Tournaments.

Yes, it seems so.

I have never seen Pedro Rodriguez but I do believe Erislandy Savon will be better than Osmay Acosta, if not now in a year or so.

Larduet is a bit raw and I don't think he'll win gold this time. Hopefully I'm wrong - always fun with a puncher.

I was surprised Isla was stopped so easily. He looked like a good boxer to me at the World Youths. Of course he has stepped up one weight class and he wasn't too strong even at 64 kg.

I guess Savon was not ready for Acosta unless Perot is really that good and dominates Acosta. I doubt that will happen.
