a few years ago i worked a few months with a scouse fellow,he loved boxing,so one lunch time we embroiled on a debate about who was the best fighter(pound for pound) you`de ever seen,i came up azumah nelson,but he was insistent on john conteh,telling me that he`d have nailed calzaghe or any other light heavy around today anyone he insisted,im`e to young to really remember him,so the question is was he really that good

I've heard loads of stories about Conteh and his talent, from what I've heard he lived the fun life similar to James Hunt and Barry Sheene who were also big stars around the same time. Unfortunately his career was over before he was 30, so who knows how good he could have been if he'd stayed away from the booze and women but f**k it - you're here for a good time, not a long time.

Conteh was a waste of talent ultimately.

He was undeniably a great technical boxer\puncher though.he fought a lot like a light heavyweight version of the great Jose Napoles.

My old man grew up with John and his talent was apparently wasted due to excess and his family being nuts. In fairness he is def one of the best british fighters ever on talent. Watch some of his fights if you haven't seen them.

There was a debate on Setanta the other month with Mcguigan and some others. They all seemed to agree that arguably Conteh was probably the most talented British fighter ever.
I don't know where you can say P4P he was the best, in terms of achievement not as great as others but his talent was undeniable.

Conteh is one of the greatest pound for pound fighters in British boxing history but you could never describe him as a boxing great, generally, simply because he blew it and never got it back.

I think Conteh was unreal..Possibly the best fighter this country has produced since the war!!

I think he'd stop Calzaghe in his prime..I can't imagine how good he would of been had he lived the life and really give it 100%... John Conteh should be remembered as a pure LEGEND..

i have to laugh at the single poster who gives it to joe over john conteh. conteh at his best was a nasty b--stard in the ring. not dirty, just mean and hurtful and he would cut calzaghe up and probably dump him on his backside before the 10th round. great skill too. def one of the best brits ever. i disagree with bennie for once prime conteh is a great.

Oh, Conteh at his peak was a real talent (although arguably we didn't actually see the best of him as his career was hindered by a combination of injury and excess). Anyway, Conteh was athletic, fast, hard, he could punch and box and was a real talent. He won the world title at 23 lived a fast and glamorous lifestyle. He was a real star in the 1970s - a boxing George Best.
