For the men Didier Bence is probably the only lock for the gold. Trupish has won so many times, but there's a big, tough field this year with a lot of younger guys. It will be intresting to how some of younger guys like Shamoon, Fish, Zewski, etc, do against older more experienced opponents.

is trupish fighting? he's been going hard for over 8 years now. he's been at 2 olympics and he was robbed at the Nationals the Olympics before that (trupish got disqualified because his over dramatic opponent, mike strange, was pull out of the ring on a stretcher claiming a foul to his back - replay showed it on the line). i remember watching him and andrew kooner sparring in the gym when they were maybe 12 y/o. best of luck to him.

What happened to Fish? He isn't on the list of boxers.

178 - Steve Franjic won the 2008 Ringside tourney so he has to be one of the favorites and I think he won the 2009 Canadian nationals too. Jonathan Rego won the 2008 James Toney Invitational and was a novice champ in 2008 so he might surprise a few people in his first appearance in the open class at the Canadian Nationals. Danny Perez will likely also battle for the top spot.

201 - Silvera Louis won it last year. With Sebastien Lalumiere not in the Nationals, I think Tamirlan Kuliev and Taffo Asongwed whom both did well last year will battle with Louis for that top spot.

Fish must be injured, he was supposed to get a bye straight to Nationals without competing in the Provincials as he was junior champion last year.

91+kg- This is all Bence. Kean was a junior champion in 2007 and holds a win over Eric Brechlin (2008 World Youth Championships runner up) but he was badly beaten by Eric Martel last year, a fighter who Bence has defeated on numerous occasions. Frankie Rill, the runner up at the previous nationals holds stoppage wins of fellow competitors Duke Davis and Denis Baldock but was brutally stopped himself by Bence with a huge right hand and then outpointed 14-6 at Nationals in a rematch . Bence is a lock for gold unless he gets injured.

91kg- Louis was a surprise winner last year, as he could only manage a second place finish at provincials but he has proved his win was more than a fluke. He enjoyed success on the international scene which saw him come one win away from qualifying for the Olympics, dropping a decision to eventual Olympic bronze medalist Osmay Acosta in the semifinals of a qualifying event. Daily is young, very talented, but very inexperienced. Asongwed moved up to super heavyweight for a bit this year but had no success and Kuliev has already been dominated by Louis, getting stopped in two rounds in the finals of last years nationals.

81kg- Franjic will surly be the favorite. He easily won the 2008 nationals where he stopped 3 of his 4 opponents. Danny Perez was the only guy to go the distance with him (38-29) and when they fought again at final team selection, Franjic won by RSCO in the third round. Ntetu has been on the national team for two years at 75kg and brings a load of experience, but outside these guys the field is somewhat limited.

75kg- Gardnier is the defending champ and he beat Hyypolite, who I believe will be his toughest competition 19-8 in the finals last year, before dropping his first bout at the box offs. The defending national team member, Francy Ntetu has moved up to 81kg . Twardzik won the Youth Commonwealth Games in 2008, Reitte has been around for a long time and had success at the national/ international levels so its hard to pick a clear favorite.

69kg- Tons of talent here. Trupish will be the favorite as he is a two time Olympian, but I wonder how much his 20-1 defeat at the Olympics took out of him, he is also getting up there in age. Shamoon, Hussein, Zewski and Cameron are all young guys to watch. Shamoon was runner up at the Youth Commonwealth Games, and Zewski hasn't had a close bout this year with the exception of a 6-4 win over Hussien, he also beat Kalunga, another participant, 25-1 at provincials.

The rest of the field is very solid, Boyd defeated Cameron 16-13 at Provincials and has been Ontario champion two years in a row. Clayton is a very powerful fighter and Kulcyzycki is the defending champion, but he has been easily beaten by Trupish twice, including an RSCO defeat, so if he can avoid getting matched against him early he could do it again.

64kg- Bochner is without a doubt the most experienced in this field (which is surprisingly small) but Mathieu Germain, who has been perfect in his first year as a senior could challenge him.

60kg- Kamal has won nationals every year since he lost to Arash Usmanee a while back . There are alot of young guys who will be in their first senior nationals that lack experience, so I see Kamal pulling it out again.

57kg- Wilcox the defending junior champion has lopsided wins over Sacranie, Lavelle, and he also beat Isho Shiba, and Ryan Ranelli, two guys who were national team members. Padriac Griffin is also very skilled. He won the 2007 Ringside Championships, and is a former Junior champion.

54kg- Lavioletee is the defending champion, winning all his bouts at last years Nationals in convincing fashion after a 120-119 count back win over Isho Shiba in the first round. Chris Plaitis is a three time junior champion with a very slick southpaw style, and his brother Manolis is currently unbeaten as a pro, 10-0 I believe

51kg- Three of the four were Juniors last year. Lally manhandled O Reily last year 27-6 I believe, so its going to come down to him and Pratte , who has been Junior champion two years in a row. I know nothing of Quinit.

You have the results of the nationals above, so I figure a few of you are interested in the composition of the canadian 2009 team. Three winners of the Boxoffs were not the national champs (at 57, 69 and 81).

54 Joey Laviolette
57 David Gauthier
60 Ibrahim Kamal
64 Brandt Butt
69 Mikaël Zewski
75 Steve Rolls
81 Steve Franjic
91 Sylvera Louis
91+ Didier Bence

There was a passing of the torch at 69, where longtime national representative Adam trupish got pasted by Zewski. At 48 and 51, both canadian champs did not make the weight and had only one opponent, si I have no idea what will happen there. It should also be noted that Kamal, Louis and Bence were exempted from the Boxoffs.

How did the box-offs work? Did they take the final 4 in each weight class or did they take the top guy and then the next best boxer in the committee's opinion? I know Franjic won the box-offs, but he had lost in the semi-finals of the Canadian Nationals by a score of 14-11 to Francy Ntetu who won the Canadian Nationals.

Actually, it's the opposite. They bumped up the limit to six boxers by weight class, and they very seldom got to that number. So one would guess that very few people were denied participation to the Boxoffs. On the other hand, the new rule worked, because Zewski, who was heads and shoulders above everybody at 69, would not have been invited if the registration was capped at 4.
I know Franjic won the box-offs, but he had lost in the semi-finals of the Canadian Nationals by a score of 14-11 to Francy Ntetu who won the Canadian Nationals.
Ntetu didn't show up at the Boxoffs. He's putting all his eggs in the "turning pro with Interbox" basket. That left Franjic with a clear path back to the national team.

I'm bumping this because in the past a few members showed an interest in the composition of the canadian team, so here is the delegation that will try to qualify for the Olympics for Canada :

49 : Émilien Boucher (Canada is traditionally very weak at lightfly and might not even send a representative to the Olympic qualifier)

52 : Kenny Lally (would be a fair bet for a qualification, but only two spots remain in that weight class)

56 : Justin Hocko (most potential of a pedestrian though deep domestic bunch, five guys had real hopes of being on the national team)

60 : Alex Rynn (dominating at the national level, has not broken through internationally)

64 : Yves Ulysse (talented, fair amount of success at the international level, but will probably need at least one career-best win to qualify)

69 : Custio Clayton (might get suspended for missing too many anti-doping tests and blowing off appointments; would be replaced by competent Panam medalist Mian Hussain)

75 : Brody Blair (winner of second Panam qualifier might be Canada's best shot, in a weight class where there are still several spots opened)

81 : Jonathan Savard (struggles outside of the country; tough weight class with the like of Carlos Gongora and the Brazilian)

91 : Samir El Mais (in a weight class where there are only 3 spots open, does not figure as a favorite)

91+ : Simon Kean (oft-injured; limited spots will make it very tough for him too)
