Joe Mesi's attorney informed the Nevada State Athletic Commission yesterday he has no intention of submitting Mesi's medical reports as requested. It's becoming increasingly evident why.
Mesi suffered not one, but at least three distinct brain injuries in his last fight according to The Buffalo News, which has learned Mesi displayed bleeding on the surface of his brain in as many as four places after his March 13 fight with Vassiliy Jirov in Las Vegas.
The medical records reveal Mesi's initial MRI on March 17 showed one subdural hematoma, or bleeding caused by torn blood vessels. An April 8 MRI showed two more subdural hematomas. The trace of a fourth brain bleed also was detected.
Mesi and his camp, including father and co-manager Jack Mesi, have vigorously denied the presence of any subdural hematoma. They are working to have his suspension overturned and have vowed Baby Joe will fight again.
But the decision to withhold his medical records from Nevada could effectively end his career - subdural hematoma or not.
The Nevada State Athletic Commission placed Mesi on indefinite suspension two months ago. Nevada's ruling was made because Mesi complained of a headache and short-term memory loss after Jirov knocked him down three times in the final two rounds.
Nevada State Athletic Commission Chairman John Bailey sent a March 19 certified letter to Mesi requesting he submit "the results of the repeat MRI, the clearance by a neurologist and all other medical evaluations performed on you since the contest" for the commission to consider removing the suspension.
Mesi stated earlier this week the records were forthcoming.
But obviously not.

So the bleeding was even worse than we thought - bleeding in multiple places definitely makes some kind of congenital vessel weakness likely. Sucks for Joe career-wise, but he's made a decent amount of money and can retire undefeated, without ever suffering getting annihilated by some big skilled true heavyweight, as would likely have been his fate had he continued in the sport.

Can't believe his dad is still in such aggressive denial about this. You'd think he'd rather have his son alive and well but working a regular day job than a drooling vegetable who got his brain scrambled in his last fight vs. heavyweight champion X. Sounds like one of those nutty parents who never realized their own dreams growing up and try to do so vicariously by pushing their children relentlessly to succeed at something. If you've watched any olympic gymnastics or skating (or many other of those sports) or one of those sick child beauty pageants you know the type of folks I'm referring to.

Poor Joe, that's a very tough break. But he's lucky it got noticed before it was too late.
His Dad is probably just in shock - all those dreams up in smoke.

Sad news,

Lets hope it was detected in time and he doesn't suffer any long term effects. Getting back in the ring again would be stupid and suicidal.

I've got a horrible feeling though that a ring return for Mesi will take place either in some dodgy state with no boxing commision, or some ulicenced fight somewhere or on the K1 curcuit.
