Froch/Taylor - Offer From America!!!

Post by Spud »

As the article states below - a firm offer has come from America with possibly Showtime wanting to show the fight:

Froch/Taylor - In America??

With the ever increasing rumours concerning a certain channel in Britain not having "a pot to p*ss in" - is that the reason why Carl Froch is so keen to travel to America to defend his title?

If the rumours are true concerning TV in this country - firstly I would like to say - thats sad for us Boxing fans - it would be fantastic For Hennessy Sports to pull off a deal for Taylor to come to England to get mashed by Froch - but the "TV Well" I am told has run dry and for Froch to be in big fights then America it might have to be.

If true about terrestrial tv - its very sad.

Haven't ITV changed chairmans recently and the new guy isn't a fan?

I hope it gets a massive Neilsen rating as two fingers to Greenburgh and Taffet!

Emerz,

It seriously bothers me - this is the first time I have become really concerned about the credit crunch and its impact on boxing!!! - dont get me wrong fully understood its hurting elsewhere, but I thought boxing could slip under its radar - it seems not!!!

From what I'm hearing, America is worse. We've already lost a Mexican channel and HBO not increasing their budget for the third year running is worrying (allegedly they were offered a Wlad fight around late summer and couldn't afford it!)

The Setanta rumours of it being in dire straits have dissipated recently.

Hey mate speaking to someone today - who is a very realiable source said something about Setanta - he cannot understand why they are surviving - I am more than happy to argue with him regarding their coverage of sport they are fantastic - and their boxing coverage is improving all the time - but channels need funding through subscribers, advertising and fairly substantial backers - I honestly hope the likes of Sky and Setanta get their backers and more than anything else as the credit crunch bites more and more I hope football doesn't have the complete monopoly on any further funding!!!

Allegedly they paid the FA over the odds for England games, which was the reason for the issue.

Of all the channels, I hope they continue. I'd miss my contact sports.

Had a quick look and Setanta are owned by a massive venture capital firm (Balderton). Suppose they will keep going as long as it is a good investment.

Fantastic news - I personally hope they invest more and more into boxing whoever the promoters are!!!

Personally though and back to the Froch thread - its going to be sad now Froch has won a world title that we may not see him in the big fights solely down to TV revenue into the sport.

Setanta make good money through advertising and sponsorship. The football the carry alone attract significant ad $.

Im no expert but i do know that america was in a depression after the wall st crash and boxing thrived. What i think may happen is that people will attend live boxing as the prices come down.
On the froch issue it would be great to see him fight on terrestrial tv it would be like when joe cal fought lacy ect.

The issue isn't boxing thriving, the issue is people expecting the kind of money that was around 12 months ago. US PPV's have struggled, advertising on all TV networks has been hit big and ITV cares little about any sport apart from football.

That's the problem with a fighter like Taylor. He was getting overpaid for fights like Spinks and Ouma, so why should he fight some fight of physical risk and less money, etc. Even if the money isn't there now - and it won't be, with him coming off 2 consecutive losses, not being champ anymore, lethargic win over Lacy, the economy - so it's always going to make him a hard man to deal with. Some favoured house fighters have been conditioned to have good money for fights risky and lacking risk both.

At least HBO wanted 2 tough foes for him - Kessler, Wright; and Showtime want to good ones also, Johnson and Froch.

I'd like to see what Taylor does. Johnson may be as hard a fight as Froch, a man who's won titles as a light heavy, big risk with maybe even less reward. 2 of Johnson's recent bouts - Fred Moore, Aaron Norwood - weren't even givne TV coverage. He's about as off the radar as you can get. Let's see if they're bluffing about the Johnson fight, if they will go ahead with it, or if they will enter the WBC purse bid in a few days.

Setanta maybe shutting sports news channel I read, it was only introduced due to virgin media falling out with sky, they backed it. What cuts in budgets should mean better fights made less mis matches!!

Update - Glen Johnson v Daniel Judah rematch Feb 28.

Would Glen fight Taylor a month after? I know he'd probably like to be a bit busier, but a month? - the man's 40 yo and that's a tough schedule as he normally has to grind out the win whether it's a Daniel Judah or a Jermain Taylor... still methinks Taylor and team are bluffing over the Johnson fight.

Presser doesn't see the fight as a stepping stone to big names, but rather a start toward "righting all the wrongs" that have been done to Glen in his career...

all this points again to something being spoken about on here a few days ago . get the promotors together and create a boxing channel . the promotors can put their prospects on there for us all to see with a subscription fee and once theres more subscriptions therell be more money so our money isnt swallowed by football , dont get me wrong i love football and am a coach myslef but i gave that up around 3 years ago due to work commintments and since then my boxing passion has flourished more than ever to an extent that my dream job used to be a football manager now it would be to be a boxing promotor , (cant be an actual fighter at mo even if i wanted to unless i lose around 3 and half stone to get me back down to welter rather than cruiser ) myself ive not felt the financial woes and would be more likely than ever to buy tickets and subscriptions.

It's not just football. The racing Uk Channel costs alot also. Each racecourse decided to set their own price for coverage rather than allowing AtTheRaces to continue showing all national racecourses, with payments based on viewing figures.

So thats more money from our subscriptions that goes to other sports. Really annoys me all this. A boxing channel would be good, I'd pay for it, but it wouldn't be run by promoters. Too many ego clashes.

Perhaps ITV is losing money because the credit crunch means the legions of vapid Heat/Star-reading imbeciles that make up the majority of its viewership no longer have as much cash to spend on their fcking pathetic phone-in votes.

Isn't it about time ther Promotors themselves put their hands in their pockets ?
Many of the calculations I've seen for boxing promotions over the years always seem to exclude any front end investment from the Promotor.
The maths all seem to be based upon the TV revenue - ie what can we get from TV rights ? - ok that's what we have to spend.
Aside from this I expect there are a few boxers seriously having to consider their allegiance.
If the ITV rumours are true, then sadly Fight Academy really has its back against the wall.
Where does that leave Clinton Woods ?
Likewise, Carl Froch (probably the most loyal UK boxer) has a dliemma.
The wrong side of 30, secured a prestigious belt, and a Promotor seemingly with no TV deal.
Then there's Junior Witter - hardly marketable with a TV deal, so without one. who knows.
I echo Spud's views.
Boxing and a lack of TV investment is like being a Championship football team without a home ground.

Surely Clinton team could co promote with a Maloney or Matchroom get on tv that way!! As both these promotors tend to do co promotion with regional firms

If this is the case about ITV then I wonder if the Froch camp will take what Taylor is offering - At the moment it looks as though it is unlikely, but would that be a mistake on the part of Froch?

I think so.

It's not looking good for Froch-Taylor then  No doubt both sides will be claiming they're being ducked. Froch should go and spark Taylor for the pittance that is on offer to build his name in the states and over here

All these spoilt fighters of the last few years are going tio have to get more realistic with pay demands if we're going to see any BIG fights anytime soon.
