Danny Williams was chosen because he was cheaper...

Post by bennie »

Forget all the 'better opponent' talk, Danny Williams was chosen for Mike Tyson because he came cheaper than Kevin McBride.
He's picking up $250,000 for the fight, an offer McBride refused.

I hope Williams gets this payday. That's what he's in the game for now.

That's about £135K - doesn't seem too much to be getting in the ring with Tyson. Still, if he manages to pull off the upset then the world is his oyster.
Better get that tape of Douglas/Tyson out..

Nevertheless, he is a better opponent. Can't see how he will possibly hold up though.

He should go to Paul McKenna. Hey, I'm serious.

You know I was thinking the same thing - worked for Benn and Steve Collins ( obviously not at the same time though! )

The Beeb are saying Danny gets around £600,000 for this?

I agree. It's poor money. Kevin McBride's promoter Richie Cappiello agreed to $450,000 but was then phoned by Shelley Finkel (Tyson's adviser) last Thursday and told that Danny would take the fight for $250,000. Cappiello was offered the fight at that price and told Finkel to kiss it.

It's still better money than Williams was going to get for fighting someone else. And if Tyson admits himself he can't get into decent shape these days then it might not be such a painful night for Danny after all.

Williams will get sparked, no question of that.

Remember Danny pulled out the last time he was due in with a world class puncher - Corrie Sanders.

Like I say, it'll be a miracle if these two actualy make it to the ring.

Mike Nosky at realboxing.com says the $250,000. I know who I believe. Nosky is top drawer.

True, the BBC seem to just make up half the stuff on their boxing page.

Sounds like they contacted Finkel and believed his BS. Finkel is trash. He should have walked away from Tyson after the earbiting incident but sold his soul for the money.
Make no mistake, the money he made on choosing Danny Williams over Kevin McBride won't be going to Tyson.

Reckon this fight will even happen? Does Danny even WANT it?
No doubt Tyson's people have looked at his record and seen - Francis L12 - and thought this guy is a stiff.
If Williams gets his head right, they might be in for a little surprise.
Tyson will probably train, what, 5 days tops?

Yes, it's one of those fights I won't believe will happen till I see them both in the ring together. Know what you're saying about Danny surprising Tyson (for a few rounds, anyway). Frans Botha did that to a rusty Tyson a few years back.
Trouble is, we've waited too long for Danny to come good to really expect a good performance from him now. I can't even remember the last time Danny looked good in a fight, it's so long ago.

WHen was the last time Tyson looked good? Etienne? Lewis? Not for me. I haven't seen the Nielsen fight before that, but apart from the Golota trip we're then back into Francis and Savarese territory. Francis was at the start of 2000.

Not saying Tyson won't win, but just on those stats, he's not got pedigree over the last five years. And if Williams can possibly approach this fight right then he's in against a guy who's averaged a fight a year for the last three years and who's not looked great in doing so. He's fought less than a round since summer 2002.

Tyson, albeit rusty and past it, IS one of the greatest Heavyweights of all time.

He still has far too much for Williams

Tyson has already won this fight.

He just has to turn up and go through the motions.

Shame really coz Williams has got talent just aint got the mental abillity to show it.

Who knows what Tyson has left, lest we forget, he's a 37 year old with indifferent training habits, who is a long long way past his best.

It's the battle of the crumbling egos, who will mentally unravel first?

If Williams gets through 3 rounds he has a shot, he's strong enough to deal with Tyson physically, and after 3, will Tyson be throwing any shots?

I give Danny a slim chance.

Danny is one of the most mentally weak fighters I have seen so doubt very much he will hold it together against Tyson, I will be shocked if he even gets the opportunity to throw many punches.

Yeah, I think that's what I was trying to say. Tyson may be an all-time great, but he's done nothing in the last few years to show he still has it. Beating up guys like Etienne, Savarese, Francis, this isn't really doing it for me.

Just on the subject of all-time legends, I'm reminded of the story of Sir Donald Bradman baing asked by then-Aussie-cricket-captain Dean Jones how much he thought he would average if he was batting against the modern bowlers Jones had to face (Bradman had a career test average of 99). Sir Don reckoned he'd average about 65. Jones was well pleased as, at the time, he was averaging around 50 himself. Then Bradman came back with,"But I am 72."

You are being too hard on Tyson, who is shot.

But even now, he will murder Williams. Murder him.

I would put my house on DW crumbling in the first couple of rounds he will absolutely crap himself when he gets in there with Tyson...

He could well get hurt in this fight...
