Edwards V Bloy, British Flyweight- SKY Friday Fight Night
Edwards V Bloy, British Flyweight- SKY Friday Fight Night
Whoa! what happened here? A few days ago it was listing four fights, the main event and 3 support including an English title and a celtic title. Now the both the English and celtic title bouts have gone, but instead there are no less than TEN fights on the bill.
Anyone going to this?
Bloy V Edwards should be an entertaining main event, and I'd say a close one, too.

Re: Stoke bill Friday- altered card.
We are sorry about this and as promoters very disappointed.
Thompson broke a bone in his hand last Friday, Napa went down with the flu (has been rescheduled for March 20th).
The Celtic Title was moved to Barnsley for Feb 27th for promotional reasons and it was too late to bring it back once Thompson was out due to weight checks and training programmes.
We did offer a number of high profile fighters an 8/10 slot but none seemed to be ready.
It seems today that fighters need 6-8 weeks to get ready for every fight. Gone are the days when a fighter was always in the gym and ready for a short notice job that would help his career develop.
The reason Ian Napa and Rendall Munroe are riding on the crest of a wave over 07-08 season is beacauce they were always in he gym and could be called on if the promotions got in trouble.
In fairness to Ashley Sexton he jumped at the chance to do an eight rounder and to be seen on television and knows a good performance could see him challenge the winner of tonights top of bill.
We still believe that this is still a good bill and features a number of good prospects who could become household names and will give good good value.

Yeah- looks like some decent well matched fights as well as some debutants on the undercard.FtmPress wrote:We still believe that this is still a good bill and features a number of good prospects who could become household names and will give good good value.
However (and I'm just being honest) it is a little disappointing that there isn't really any chief support for the main event now.
I would have gone to this, but other things got in the way.
As for the Main event itself, it looks decent enough.

I would of gone too, if I didn't have a stack of self assessments to complete. These promoters just don't think when scheduling their shows :(

Re: Edwards V Bloy, British Flyweight- SKY Friday Fight Night
I'm just glad to see a British flyweight Title fight, this belt has had some great battles down the years.
Its been on the sidelines for to long now.
Have to go for Edwards to win tonight, think he'll be a bit to experienced for Bloy, late stoppage

Re: Edwards V Bloy, British Flyweight- SKY Friday Fight Night
Chris Edwards claimed the British and Commonwealth flyweight titles after Wayne Bloy was forced to retire after four rounds on Friday evening.
Re: Edwards V Bloy, British Flyweight- SKY Friday Fight Night
Edwards had him going in round one, and bloy didn't really get into the fight at all, and was pulled out after taking a lot of shots in round 4.
Looks like quite a lively undercard, too,

Re: Edwards V Bloy, British Flyweight- SKY Friday Fight Night
Sky team did everything they could to big up the event. I found it funny when I heard comments like "this is a step up in class" when the opponent only had one win on his record. "Will the HW keep is 100% KO record" was another, you would think he had at least 6 fights behind him, whearas he had actually only had two. Edwards fight wasnt bad but Bloy was no match for the slugger. What the fornicate was all that about saying Edwards story was like a Rocky film, I couldnt see any comparison. A poor night of boxing on Sky.
Re: Edwards V Bloy, British Flyweight- SKY Friday Fight Night
It was an excellent performance by Edwards, I hate to put the damperner on things but... how can the BBBoC justify to sanction this match for the British title, and not the first meeting between Robinson and Edwards?
This was 2nd British title fight at the devision in close to 10 years, and the first time we have a British champion since 2000. I'm not sure how Bloy was justified "good enough" when all the fighters in the interim period were not. It was a pretty bad show from Bloy, who through ring rust or whatever was defensively terrible and looked clueless in his survival techniques.
I just don't think there is enough of a talent pool to jusitify a British Flyweight AND Super Flyweight title.

Was this the Uk's worst televised main event ever? (not in terms of performance, but as a headline it is awful
Re: Edwards V Bloy, British Flyweight- SKY Friday Fight Night
Well, the thing is it is hard to say. Sometimes boxing matches go this way- Bloy was clearly hurt in the first round and never got into it. Had things been a little different, then it might have been a really good fight- sometimes it just doesn't go that way, though.E wrote:Was this the Uk's worst televised main event ever? The support card, again, that was OK - two pretty typical bouts with prospects stopping foriegn opponents of limited ability, a prospect winning easily on points and a couple of decent fights.
But yeah, in this case hardly a sensational main event.

I'm not sure if you can count the "fight skool" stuff, as that was designed for Prospects... but Foster Jnr vs Sean Hughes was a headliner there once.
Paul Lloyd vs Nkoko was a main event on Sky.... although of course a never to be forgotton about undercard fight between Spencer Oliver and Patrick Mullings over shadowed it.
Jones vs Kel Brook wasn't to inspiring either.
Re: Edwards V Bloy, British Flyweight- SKY Friday Fight Night
It certainly was no worse that some of the recent televised commonwealth main events.
Re: Edwards V Bloy, British Flyweight- SKY Friday Fight Night
I went to the show last night.
Thought it turned out to be a good little show.
When there are pull outs, sometimes there's not a lot that can be done, and as it was, the crowd went home happy so it worked out ok.
I think the atmosphere made up for the one sided nature of the main event.., at flyweight there are not too many options if you want to keep the British Title active.
The Scot Miller fight was a cracker, absolute war!!
Kevin Hammond against Jimmy Docherty saw two kids with good records facing each other, so yeah, for a small hall show i thought it turned out ok.

Re: Edwards V Bloy, British Flyweight- SKY Friday Fight Night
Good perforance from Edwards, but he was in against a poor challenger. Bloy tried his best, full credit to him
, but it was one sided and Wayne was out of his division. The depth of eligible challengers at flyweight is low, so I feel sympathetic to those involved, but as a competitive match it didn't really warrant a British title. But, it wasn't the first and it won't be the last time a below par boxer fights for a British title. Hopefully Edwards will have a more worthy challenger next time.

Chris Edwards has got to be the person that the saying 'If at first you don't succeed , try and try again' was written for.
He has more losses than wins on his record, but he's now a 2 weight British champion.

True, but in a division where there isnt a lot of competition. At a higher weight he would just be a journey man slugger.Old bones Ian wrote:Chris Edwards has got to be the person that the saying 'If at first you don't succeed , try and try again' was written for.

Certainly one of the worst. Edwards/Bloy, was one sided and had it been more competetive it might have improved the night a little better. Sky boxing is not what it used to be.E wrote:Was this the Uk's worst televised main event ever? (not in terms of performance, but as a headline it is awful

Well done Edwards, but it just proves how poor the lower weight divisions are in the UK.Old bones Ian wrote:Chris Edwards has got to be the person that the saying 'If at first you don't succeed , try and try again' was written for.

And there is no need for a superfly division.
Weight divisions should be change to reflect the growing human stature.
It's ridiculous that there are only 3 weight divisions above 12 stone.... I don't know anyone who weighs 8 stone....
