Margarito trying to plaster Mosley?
7:29 PM, January 24, 2009
Officials found what one doctor described as plaster of Paris hidden in the wrapped hands of Antonio Margarito (above left at the weigh-in Friday) shortly before the welterweight champion's title defense against Shane Mosley (above right) on Saturday at the Staples Center, leading to accusations that Margarito may have been trying to cheat.
According to Judd Burstein, the attorney for Mosley, Margarito had wet pads in the wrapping. Mosley's doctor, Robert Olvera, likened the material to the type of plaster used to make casts.
"It gets hard and mobile," said Olvera, who said he scratched the pad and "flakes of plaster of Paris" came off.
Burstein said he seized the pad removed from the wrapping and another pad found in Margarito's dressing room. Both were placed in a sealed box that was given to Dean Lohuis of the California Boxing Commission for further study.
Burstein said representatives of both boxers "discussed this exact issue" at Friday's rules meeting "and they went ahead and violated it."
After the suspicious pads were removed from Margarito's dressing room, the boxer's hands were rewrapped and the fight went off on time. Because the violation was caught before Margarito stepped into the ring, Margarito's camp will likely be subject to little more than a disciplinary action if the substance is found to be illegal.
Nazzim Richardson, the trainer for Mosley, was the first to notice something unusual about Margarito's wrap job and asked officials to take the tape off. That's when the foreign substance was discovered, seized and placed in a box for investigation after the bout.
"That's a serious offense," an official with Golden Boy, Mosley's promoter, said. "That's cheating."
Mosley was informed of the discovery before the fight, Burstein said. According to the lawyer, Mosley said he took that as evidence that Margarito "was scared" going into the bout.
Todd duBoef, president of Top Rank, Margarito's promoter, shrugged and said he was told only that "additional gauze" had been taken off his fighter's hand wraps.
What you guys think of this??

Margarito should go to prison if it's proven.
Just because he didn't get away with it that has nothing to with it, the consequences could have been awful.
It would cast serious doubt over his win again Cotto which should probably be expunged from the record books.

Mosley and his team complaining of cheating? Pot...Kettle...Black.
Re: Margarito cheat??
I'll wait until it's proven before I make any snap judgements here.
Re: Margarito cheat??
I've been keeping up with the news surrounding the fight and Mosley has never accused Margarito of cheating. You should watch the post-fight press conference (BS have it) and you'll see what a great professional Shane Mosley is. Not once does he say a bad word about Antonio Margarito.winkveron wrote:Mosley and his team complaining of cheating? Pot...Kettle...Black.
Re: Margarito cheat??
Margorito's side are saying that Nazim was complaining about the hands being wrapped too high and it was nothing to do with an illegal substance.
I think we'll only really know what went on when the commission make a statement and reveal if they really did consficate something.

Funny how it's Nazim again isn't it?
It was him who accused Trinidad back in 2001.
Oh yeah and apparently Cottos team saw nothing wrong with Margos wrapping so you can drop that argument.

Re: Margarito cheat??
if you mean the HBO broadcast, could it simply be symptomatic of the crass, ranting verbal diarrhoeah afflicting Jim Lampley, rather than a genuine issue? as someone said in current scene Lampley seemed desperate to instantly back-project the problem to the Cotto fight thus sullying Toni's win over Lampley's favourite w***-fantasy.....Terence wrote: It was talked about repeatedly on the commentary, surely they would only do this if something was confiscated?
Re: Margarito cheat??
Yeah i was talking about that myself - how Hopkins team complained about Trinidad's wraps.banjo wrote:Funny how it's Nazim again isn't it?

I wasn't sure if it was Naz Richardson though back then too, but i had a hunch.
Again, it was all baloney.
Margarito and his corner strike me as being hard grafting, honest pro's and not the sort to resort to fishy wraps. Maybe i'll be wrong but i dont think so.

Well spotted by the Hopkins/Mosley Camp.
6 months in Jail and a fine for the wrapper of the hands and a suspension and fine for Margarito, Antonio is an experienced fighter and must know what constitutes legal and illegal.
Maybe the poster who said Cotto was more busted up than usual against Margarito
Arum should also be held accountable - he is the CEO so he has also failed.

Re: Margarito cheat??
Don't really think the Cotto fight comes into question does it?
Surely they would have had the same officiating process in that fight with a member of Miguels team overlooking what was happening. If they didn't see anything wrong when the fight took place and the hands were wrapped theres nothing that can be done now.
All this about the Cotto fight being removed from the records is over the top. Lets wait to see what the investigation reveals first.

Re: Margarito cheat??
If the other camp make enough fuss, they're going to re-wrap the hands regardless. And if they start questioning if the stuff is legal or not, then the commission will take it away to test, just to be seen to be doing the right thing.
Could well prove to be a storm in a teacup I reckon. I doubt Marg's team really thought they needed to risk going to jail over a fight they were heavily expected to win.

Re: Margarito cheat??
Already ppl finding reasons for Cotto getting beaten. I would have thought that was down to his stamina problem. The fact that - unlike Mosley - Cotto backed off after landing flush shots and was chased down by Margarito. Mosley, tellingly, manhandled AM in clinches, pushed him back.
Cotto is an HBO favorite, etc
Who knows though. If the Mosley/Balco story was raging before this fight, it might have put a chip on the shoulder of Margarito/his team and inspired them to do something dodgy themselves. I mean, certain performances enhancers hard to trace/untraceable -- 'he's probably on it right now!', etc etc -- 'so let's find an equaliser'.
Another Mexican, JL Castillo, responded in a similar way to what he perceived as Corrales cheating the count with the mouthpiece spitting in fight one. eg Failing to make the weight, coming in big in the rematch, trying to fool the scales. (though I think JLC couldn't make the weight anyway after such a hard first fight, but tellingly neglected to tell anyone)

Cotto also had breathing difficulties from the blood he was swallowing from the broken nose - which IMO opinion contributed to his slowing significantly down the stretch.Autobarn wrote:Already ppl finding reasons for Cotto getting beaten. The way Mosley was able to wrestle effectively with Tony on the inside, and his skill at covering up and turning away from the punches also made a massive difference, Margarito just couldn't be effective on the inside.
Re: Margarito cheat??
yeah, as someone remarked to me, it was akin to Holyfield vs Tyson 1. The older, supposedly worn out guy using strength, skills, sneaky shots, head in the face - everything... to discover the supposedly irresistable force at the weight.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Cotto also had breathing difficulties from the blood he was swallowing from the broken nose - which IMO opinion contributed to his slowing significantly down the stretch.Autobarn wrote:Already ppl finding reasons for Cotto getting beaten. aye, true. unfortunately if Lampley says something I will unavoidably treat it as completely tainted. on account of him being a complete tool.Terence wrote:Could be, but just because Lampley may have an axe to grind it does not mean that there was not a bit of a tizz pre-fight. That would be Harold Lederman I think.
Re: Margarito cheat??
plaster of paris (pop) takes at least 24 hours to dry properly although it will get 'hard' in about 5 mins. its an exothermic reaction when the pop is activated by dipping it in water (or hand sweat !!)
should the activated/semi-set pop then be moved/hit/bent/pressurised with any force then the pop will break down into a loose gauze format.
therefore...
if proven this looks like areasonable effort at cheating by margaritos team, in reality it would do no good whatsoever as the pop would become loose gauze.
try the old horshoe in the glove, far more effective !!! ....

Not suggesting this is any where near the same, but anyone seen last years American docu' about the Resto/Collins scandal from the early 80's?
