Rights lads. Been in Portugal for a few weeks and am getting the Boxing DTs. This weekend's bill looks a belter. Moore v Duran - In a word....

Tell me Moore

I was thinking about this one, you'd go with Moore generaly, being the "hot prospect" - but the African is tough, and Jamie has has early loss to Dixon on his record. Makes you wonder how tough he really is.....

Moore is Commonwealth light-middleweight champion. Duran is Commonwealth welterweight champion. A good big 'un, as they say.
This is still a good match because Duran has never been stopped and will come to win. Hearn and Shep give 'opponents' plenty of notice for fights on their shows. Duran has known about this fight for weeks.

Didn't anyone else pick up on this? I thought it was cool....

"Anyone else notice the significance of a Duran-Moore matchup? At Light-Middleweight too! In fact it was in June too, 21 years ago!

Duran in 8 anyone?"

Yeah, I'll use it then or the next time Moore or Duran fights. It wouldn't be the biggest shock in the world if Duran were to win.

PS: I was at BN in June 1983 the day after Duran stopped Moore. This was pre-internet of course, and the phone never stopped ringing with people enquiring about the result. Duran's shock win spread a lot of happiness among British fight fans.
Graham Houston, who rarely gets it wrong, tipped Moore to win easily in his preview.

Yes, that fight destroyed Moore didn't it?

EDIT: Actually not as much as I remembered, he went on to stop Benitez after the Duran defeat.

Didn't he get run over and killed by his own car some time ago?

In 1988 he tried to stop his jeep rolling down his drive in the snow. He ran in front of the jeep, turned around, and used his hands, legs and lower back to try and hold the car. He then slipped down on to his backside and the car rolled over him and cut him in half.

Yeah I thought it was a thread about the original 80's fight when I first saw the title.
Poor old Moore, he was absolutely brutalized in the Duran fight.
Booed by his home town crowd in the introductions, then Duran stuck a thumb in his eye right at the start, and he was pretty much one eyed for the rest of the beating.

There was a song "Who killed Davey Moore?" but it was about another fighter, Davey Moore "The Springfield Rifle" a featherweight who died in the ring in the 60's, during a world title fight.
Tragic end for both of them in the end.
