Thaxton V Anthony Mezaache, another Hennessy SN clash!

Post by whicker »

Thaxton is lined up to face Anthony Mezaache, on the same night as the Olympic debutant make their bow on a allegedly bill.

I'm getting a bit annoyed at these constant event clashes. Given that boxing fans can't be in two places (or watch two channels) at once it is a bit counter productive.

French lightweight champion, not a big puncher but a mate of mine in France says he's not a bad boxer and reaonsably durable, comes in shape apparently and gives his best.

Should be a Thaxton win just a case of can he stop the guy really I guess, although if the guy is a mover he could pose some problems for Jonno but he should be on a level above even at his age one would hope.

Thetford's big-hitting Jon Thaxton defends his European lightweight title against French voluntary Anthony Mezaache on local turf at Norwich Showground on February 28.
Thaxton won the title at the same venue in October with a spectacular third-round knockout of Spain's 36-1 Juan Carlos Diaz Melero. Southpaw Jon nailed his man with a huge right hook to net one of the biggest titles in boxing and will have his eyes on bigger fish than Mezaache, who brings the French lightweight title and good durability but a mixed bag of a record at 14-5-3 (3), although he is unbeaten in his last seven (two draws).
Mezaache, from Clichy in Paris and a man who dabbles in the worlds of martial arts and kickboxing, won the French title with a 10-round decision over Marseille's rugged Afif Hamdani in 2007 and hasn't lost since useful Belarussian Andrei Kudriavtsev outscored him on a majority 10-round decision in Monte Carlo in November 2006. More than that, Mezaache has never been stopped but has yet to face a puncher in the Thaxton league and was outscored by tall Scot Dave Stewart in an eight-rounder over here in 2005, the same Stewart who later lost in 12 rounds to Thaxton. The comparison says it all, really.
Swarthy Anthony, who holds two wins over Mounir Guebbas, is not a puncher but tough and capable enough to hang in there for a few rounds until the stocky, relentless champion, a long-time light-welterweight who gave Ricky Hatton a 12-round war, overwhelms him in one of the middle rounds.

Poor fight for Jono - in his advanced years he surely needs to be taking more meaningful fights.

Well he's defending his title, an optional defence. My guess is he's waiting to see if he'll get some kind of big fight opportunity and that if it doesn't happen, he'll fight someone like Kudriatsev or Murray, whoever the mandatory is.

thaxton should fight Prescott

if he beat prescott, he could & would get a mega money fight with Khan

its honourable he is fighting for decent belts but he might as well make some decent splash to set himself up for his retirement which cant be too far off

Can't see it ever happening, sad, but just the way things are.

I've just been watching a You Tube of Jonny Owen. He won the British title, then the commonwealth title, then the European title and then he fought for a world belt. That is how it should be.

The "Khan Route" seems to be win an Olympic sliver medal, then move like a world title is his by "rights" , picking and choosing who and what belts he fights for.

if thaxton or murray beat Prescott they would get a fight with Khan

so long as they didnt put stupid demands in or want to promote the fight with Hennessey

they could easily get the fight for £100k, a purse neither will ever earn without Khan

they are boxers with hard earned titles and something to lose. You don't just go and give away every advantage. Both those guys, if they were to beat Khan, would have to do it the hard way, pressure, pressure, pressure. For instance the Khan "offer" to Murray. Khan has been splattered, something every fighter in the country wanted to do. And Murray has to drop his british title, no doubt has to be on the SN show with the big ring, rematch clause so you have to beat him twice (ok ok the money's in the rematch), and god knows what else. Khan's not a baby.

Only way I could see Murray or Thaxton getting decent terms is if one of the beat Prescott. That's the only way I can see SN actively pursuing such a match as it would be an indirect way or rubbing out the Prescott hammering. Don't reckon anyone's in a hurry to face Prescott.
