According to newspaper articles, Firpo knocked Dempsey down multiple times in their 1923 fight, including knocking him clear out of the ring at one point, which inspired a famous painting by artist George Bellows:

According to the New York Times, Dempsey was down twice, Firpo ten times. Read all about it on the record.

Thanks for adding that, Robin! An all-time-great fight like that (especially when no video is available as for modern-day great bouts) deserves it.

First time I had read that article myself, was quite surprised that Dempsey was within an eyelash of losing his title. Apparently when he got back to his corner he claimed he had seen a "million stars."
