Here in Quebec, what we call Golden Gloves (Gants dorés) are actually the Quebec championships.
But I was looking at the 2008 USA Golden Gloves, and I recognized only three finalists, but that was because 2 of the guys recently turned pro and the other fought for the Haiti national team.
So my question is : What is the purpose of the USA Golden Golden? Who goes there to compete and why aren't the national team guys participating?

It's one of 3 National ranking tournaments. It's the second most important one after the USAs. The reason none of our National team was there last year was because that was our Olympic team and they don't compete domestically after making the Olympic team. There were a multitude of good boxers in the Golden Gloves last year, including many who went to the Olympic Trials. A lot of boxers enter Golden Gloves, pretty much everyone who enters the USAs will enter Golden Gloves as well; you'll see a lot of the same guys in both tournaments.
