He's a British Olympic champion, one of only three we have had in half a century, and for that he has my complete respect --- end of.
If he has gold business cards, so what?
What would you prefer, him not be proud of winning a gold medal and representing his country? He has every right to be a bit arrogant right now. He hasn't even boxed as a pro yet and people are slagging him off. People on here are so sad.
Were Roy Jones Jr or Mayweather not arrogant - and arrogant after they both failed to win gold medals. Why can't people just support our boxers?

Roy Jones didn't fail to win a gold medal - he was robbed, plain and simple. Don't revise historygobbles wrote:emma wrote:what does evryone think of him?

As for Degale - good luck to him, I hope he does well. It would be great to see him matched with old amateur nemisis Sutherland down the line. It would be good to see him against Groves down the line for that matter..
Re: James Degale
It's going to be tough with our 2008 Olympians and watching them get the Frankie treatment. I want to be so positive about them and to a point I will but when he starts to take the piss Goz will be scathing.
I remember watching the showcase of the 84 US Olympians on ITV - that was really cool, Holyfield, Whitaker, Breland, Biggs, think I'm probably forgetting someone there - but I remember thinking how good it would be if it were Brits.
Well having 3 of that amateur pedigree making their debuts is pretty close and I'm looking forward to their careers but am watching Fwankie. Like a hawk.

Being proud and being arrogant are two different things. IMO nobody has the right to be arrogant. Proud yes, arrogant no.gobbles wrote:emma wrote:what does evryone think of him?

im just looking forward to him fightnin sutherland again further down the line, should be a cracker
Re: James Degale
Me too.... my feeling is that Sutherland has a style that will see him do well in the pros. I'm not at all sure that DeGale will make it to the top as a pro. Once he gets past the stage of fighting selected opposition I think he'll struggle. Could be wrong....neil hibbert wrote:im just looking forward to him fightnin sutherland again further down the line, should be a cracker
I've not actually met DeGale, so he may be a much nicer guy than he appears when he comes on TV giving it the "arrogance".... I used to have the same feelings about Carl Froch till I actually met him at an Army Charity Boxing do one evening. Talking to him he came across totally different to the TV persona - but maybe that's "real life" versus "showbusiness"!
Anyway good luck to both JDeG and DS.... hope they fight in the pros, I'd like to see that one.

I depends what you perceive as arrogant. Handing out gold business cards just seems like a kid having fun. DeGale seems a very nice guy.

I think DeGale is getting a bit of a rough deal on here - Lets see how he does in the ring, if he's as hyped as Khan was/is then fair enough

On the flipside, you could argue that Degale hasn't even boxed as a pro yet and he already thinks the world owes him something. He's already made it. He's already a superstar. He wants two million quid for his presence.gobbles wrote:emma wrote:what does evryone think of him?

Chris Eubank had it spot on the other day.
Also, let's quit the Olympic boxing nostalgia, can we? Don't try and tell me Degale's gold medal means the same as Sugar Ray Leonard's or even Pernell Whitaker's. Amateur boxing has changed drastically even since those days, in terms of competition and the physical act.
Also, Roy Jones and Floyd Mayweather were never cocky/arrogant from the start - at least not on TV anyway. They got that way after winning multiple world titles in multiple weight divisions as a legendary pros.

They may all go the way of Khan - just fed easy foight after easy fight.
Sutherland has a beter chance of getting the support and god fights because he is with Maloney.
Re: James Degale
Agree. If a couple of years from now they have 9-0 records and are still fighting losing journeymen taking their 20th defeat in a row, or alphabet soup Eastern European imports, then yeah, they will have "passed their sell by date."Goz wrote:It's going to be tough with our 2008 Olympians and watching them get the Frankie treatment. exactly if hes proud then fair enough but he comes across as arrogant. I mean come on bragging about the women and minor celebrities hes slept with!! thats arrogant.
what other boxer hands out business cards??? not even amir khan did that and he had way more media attention after his olympic win.
Re: James Degale

Sadly, I can only see a serious train crash coming.
Hope I'm totally wrong, and Jimmy Mac f@@ks him so badly on his legendary runs, he ain't got the energy to hand out his cards, let alone sort out his lady friends.
Time will tell.

Cant stand him, think he'll go all the way.
Re: James Degale
I don't like him at all. Arrogance to a point I can live with like Brook or Calzaghe, but DeGale just goes over the top. He's already talking as if he's a multiple world champion, when he's not. Yes, that Olympic gold has to be respected, but that doesn't mean I have to like him. He just has a way about him which I don't find too appealing. I also agree with Eubank wholeheartedly, I don't think this kid is going to be as big as he thinks he will be. I will be rooting against him unless he develops some humility and learns the difference between outrageously and obnoxious arrogance and self-belief.

He is coming across as a complete tit..I dont know him, he may be a sound fella but someone needs to take him to one side and let him know what a fool he is!
To me this smacks of him knowing he hasnt got that exciting a style so he needs a 'personality' to make him markatable!!
Sutherland will just sell ticket because he is perfect for the pro game!

Re: James Degale
It should mean much more than Whitaker and Leonard's gold medals. Why? Whitaker won in 1984 when there was a boycott by the entire Soviet Bloc including Cuba, Leonard won in 1976 when there was a huge African boycott. That is why both years there were huge hauls by the US and that the Olympics in 1984 were on home soil and in 1976 in Canada, which always helps.Eraserhead wrote:On the flipside, you could argue that Degale hasn't even boxed as a pro yet and he already thinks the world owes him something. DeGale, however, beat both the US and the Cuban representative on the way to his gold, he also beat Sutherland, the African champion and a reigning Olympic champion. Not bad, eh?
Whitaker, in contrast, didn't have to qualify and beat guys from Nicaragua, Uganda, West Germany, South Korea and Puerto Rico and none of his opponents were ever heard of again. Interestingly, he was beaten by the No 1 Cuban at the world championships.
DeGale also seems a much better role model than Brook, who, after all, managed to get himself stabbed in a fight outside a nightclub.

Re: James Degale
Hopefully he does well but you never know what can happen especially with Brits, we've had so many sportsmen/women where people have said "he/she's gonna be the next [insert random celebrated sportsperson here]" and it's all gone tits up, most of the time because they're not good enough and sometimes because they don't have the hunger or the willpower to succeed.

Re: James Degale
DeGale does come across as a bit of a tit, it must be said. The sight of him lounging in his trackie, chewing gum on Buncies show was not a good one. Still, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt (which he's surely elated to hear). Can't really see him going all the way as a pro though.
