Would Hatton be the best lb4lb boxer if he beats the Pacman
Would Hatton be the best lb4lb boxer if he beats the Pacman
OK, first of all, a mythical title which everyone has their own opinion on.
Hatton believes, that anyone who beats Pacman would claim this title, he believed it and said it when DLH was fighting Pacman and he's saying it again now, but would that really have made DLH the best lb4lb boxer on the planet ? i think not, if Pacman put on 100lbs and fought Valuev he'd get raped. If pacman fought a nobody and got cut and couldn't continue, he'd lose, so would this mean the nobody would become the best lb4lb, again, no it wouldn't. Extreme examples but you get my drift.
So then, do you believe Hatton will be the best lb4lb boxer on the planet should he beat Pacman, if so, why ? If not, then who would be and would Hatton jump above the Pac ?
Personally, i dont believe he would be the best lb4lb. I think he should step back up after this fight and try his hand again at Welterweight, where there are many options for him.

Re: Would Hatton be the best lb4lb boxer if he beats the Pacman
Hes just saying it to hype himself and the fight up. Ofcourse he wouldn't be ahead of Calzaghe, Hopkins, Mosley and Marquez and for beating up on a former flyweight. Some on here would say he isn't the P4P best out of the Northern England 140lb division ![[icon_e_biggrin.gif] :D](./images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif)
Re: Would Hatton be the best lb4lb boxer if he beats the Pacman
Unquestionably P4P number 1 for me. "To be the man, you gotta beat the man!".
Re: Would Hatton be the best lb4lb boxer if he beats the Pacman
No, P4P as you say is mythical and based entirely on opinions. Pac just squeaked past Marquez in a fight that could have gone either way, then beat an overmatched opponent in Diaz and then beat a version of Oscar well past his prime. If Marquez beats Diaz handily then he will become my #1 p4p seeing how he also defeated Casamayor impressively as well.

I have to say, spot on. I agree with everything here should Hatton lose to Pac-man but should Pac-man beat Hatton then i'd keep him as P4P number 1. But should Hatton and JMM win their respective fights, then I'd say JMM deserves the nod, worked hard to get where he is, he's even had to go far out of his way to fight a champion for almost nothing compared to what a modern day big fight salary generates. That is a testament of true greatness, taking on every perceivable threat, even if it means going to their house and beating them. (or at the very least having a controversial match that could have gone either way with the right judges) If Hatton should beat Pac-man however, he will be on my top ten p4p list probably for beating the man.banjo wrote:No, P4P as you say is mythical and based entirely on opinions. Honestly, I'd actually pick Pacquiao to beat the Valuev that Holyfield faced. How the Hell would he even come close to laying a glove on him as he was zipping about?

Re: Would Hatton be the best lb4lb boxer if he beats the Pacman
I dont like this stupid lb4lb thing its meaningless. I would rather have it termed "the best current fighter, all things considered". Even then its only opinion, and people would disagree so yo need to add, in the opinion of. To answer the question, of course not, Hatton is the naturally bigger man. Anyway its going to be the year of the little men winning. Pac will defeat Hatton, and Barrera will knock Khan out cold, simple as that. By the way Valuev is the biggest lb4lb champion and nobody can dispute that.Cannibal wrote:Honestly, I'd actually pick Pacquiao to beat the Valuev that Holyfield faced. Re: Would Hatton be the best lb4lb boxer if he beats the Pacman
This is the Ring's current P4P top 10:
1. Manny Pacquiao
2. Juan Manuel Marquez
3. Joe Calzaghe
4. Bernard Hopkins
5. Israel Vazquez
6. Shane Mosley
7. Rafael Marquez
8. Ivan Calderon
9. Ricky Hatton
10. Celestino Caballero
If Hatton beats Pacquiao then he will be in with a very good chance of becoming the P4P No.1.
How many others on the list would have a win as big as that on their record?

Well many would say that Marquez would first have to lose to Diaz while Hatton would have to beat Pacquiao, odds are not in favor of that happening. Still, at the very least it is a possibility.Horse wrote:This is the Ring's current P4P top 10:

I couldn't put Marquez above Pacman in that scenario. But I always go by the actual result, not the performance, so Marquez v Pacman 2 still puts Manny ahead for me.

One could see why that would be, though that fight was controversial and has people on both sides who would argue their fighter won. Suppose Marquez and Pacquiao both lost their respective fights, who would be p4p #1 in your honest opinion?Emerson Poncey Name Ghent wrote:I couldn't put Marquez above Pacman in that scenario. If Marquez struggles with Diaz and Hatton destroys Pacquiao, I think that many would have Hatton higher.vagabundo55 wrote:Well many would say that Marquez would first have to lose to Diaz while Hatton would have to beat Pacquiao, odds are not in favor of that happening. I think it is largely about how they each look in their next fights, not just about the victories.
Re: Would Hatton be the best lb4lb boxer if he beats the Pacman
Hatton. He would beat the best fighter in the world at a weight that's competitive for Manny. I'd have Marquez down at 3rd.
But I agree he should've won the rematch, and I actually had the first a draw (I think).

No IMO Hatton needs to have an impressive win at welterweight against the likes of Cotto/Mosely etc for me to consider him as ~1 P4Per

No. It isnt like a title belt, it's a reflection of your career achievements - and the level of skill you operate on. There are plenty of fighters with better careers and better skills.
However, a win over Pacqauio puts him in the top 5 I'd say it would still be a very good win and Hatton has still to lose at 140.

Yes, I think you make a fair point. Pacquiao is acknowledged by most, not everyone, but most people as the P4P No1. If Ricky wins, then he will have beaten THE man.Emerson Poncey Name Ghent wrote:Unquestionably P4P number 1 for me. "To be the man, you gotta beat the man!".
However, the sooner Mayweather jr comes back, the sooner all this P4P debate shit will be put to rest.
Re: Would Hatton be the best lb4lb boxer if he beats the Pacman
Like who? Hatton would definitely have one of the best records in boxing with a win over Pacquiao.jamesmcdonnell wrote:There are plenty of fighters with better careers and better skills.
Re: Would Hatton be the best lb4lb boxer if he beats the Pacman
Not for me - he'd move up the list for sure but not take Manny's place at numero uno.
Re: Would Hatton be the best lb4lb boxer if he beats the Pacman
I think the best thing to do with p4p rankings is not to take them too seriously. It cracks me up when people get the arse about fighter x being ranked 9th, rather than 5th, say, in a mythical list. We're talking about the best 10 or so fighters in the world, out of a cast of thousands.
For the record, I wouldn't consider Hatton the best fighter in the world if he beat Pacquiao. I'd certainly up my estimation of him if he pulled it off though.

Re: Would Hatton be the best lb4lb boxer if he beats the Pacman
Hatton hasnt beaten a great fighte since Tszyu, lots of good and very good fighters, but not great ones. He has only mixed it with the sports real elite twice, winning one and losing one. A win over Pacman would of course be very good, but it would also have to be taken into consideration that Hatton is by far the naturally bigger man. Oscar was absolutely dessicated at 147 - he was as dry as a nun's pudendum.Horse wrote:Like who? Look at the records of people like Pacquaio, DLH, Mosley, Hopkins, Marquez, these guys have faced off against the very best competition available - even Oscar, whose record people complain about, has a record which absolutely shits on hattons.
There is only one exceptional win on Hatton's record, and that's Tszyu.
Hatton's a very very good fighter, but he isn't a great, and for me a win over Pacquaio doesn't change that.

I think he would be #1 P4P

Re: Would Hatton be the best lb4lb boxer if he beats the Pacman
Why? Why on earth would that make hatton the best fighter in the world.
Pacman has NO PEDIGREE at 140 whatsoever. He has fought twice above super feather, once at lightweight and once against a bone dry Oscar.
This is a handicap fight, Hatton has big physical advantages going in. The only thing which will win this for hatton is his advantage in strength. Pacman is better in almost every respect, except perhaps footwork. He is quicker, hits with better technique, has a better defence, and has a better all round skillset than hatton.
Hopkins has done more to be top man P4P than Hatton by far.

Hatton & Hopkins fights 2005 - 2009:jamesmcdonnell wrote:Hopkins has done more to be top man P4P than Hatton by far.
Hatton - Tszyu, Maussa, Colazzo, Urango, Castillo, Mayweather (lost), Lazcano & Malignaggi.
Hopkins - Eastman, Taylor (lost), Taylor (lost), Tarver, Wright, Calzaghe (lost) & Pavlik.
I currently have Hopkins above Hatton in my P4P rankings, but his recent record is hardly anything to gush over. The gap between the two is not very big, in my opinion.

- Come now, time to bury Pops. He's 3-3 on the box rec barometer of last 6 fights. Only looked to be any class in 2 of them and I suspect against any threat he will revert back to spoiler type.jamesmcdonnell wrote: Hopkins has done more to be top man P4P than Hatton by far.
Ricky has a decent claim. KT, then Collazo has looked good in his losses with a broken hand against Shane and many if not most thought he whooped Berto, more than thought he whooped Ricky. Urango only has the single loss to Ricky and looks like superman these days. Nobody ever battered Paulie like what Ricky did.
Thought he did better than he's slammed for against MMoney and Cortez. He has the kinda of style and attributes to beat Manny. His problem is gonna be busting up and Manny will bust his mug up big time. It's gonna be a war of attrition with Ricky brawling and muscling Pac around as much as the ref allows.
I wouldn't pick him to win, but he's got a decent chance and I don't see how anyone can complain about two fighters willing to put on a fight of this caliber regardless of the result.
Re: Would Hatton be the best lb4lb boxer if he beats the Pacman
I'd think Hatton would put himself right in the mix if he could pull off a win over Pacquaio, which is no small task. I think Pacquiao will be fighting somewhere close to where he would be most happy these days. I don't think he's going to see 130 again, so he's basically at least a lightweight these days, regardless of where he started. Its not like he's gone from fly to light welter in the space of two fights. I'm not saying Pacquaio might not be giving away a few pounds come fight night, but I don't think we're dealing with a David V Goliath fight either.
