Brook vs Elwell RBR
Re: Brook vs Elwell RBR
The match-up didn`t do boxing any favours, but then again SN aren`t interested in that anyway :(
Lets hope now, with the incredible tallent Brook undoubtly is, that the board will refuse any other further mis-matches being made for him.
This type of match-up doesn`t really help Brook (apart from financially and another step closer to keeping the belt for good) and it doesn`t help boxing.
He has the look of a young prospect going all the way to the top, very much like Ryan Rhodes did some years ago .. he reminds me so much of Rhodes .. sadly the same faults seem to be there also :( ... I`ll keep my fingers crossed they can sort these out before he goes anywhere near the world class opposition out there.

One of the defences has to be against a mandatory challenger.banjo wrote:You win the british title, defend it three times(used to be twice) then the belt is yours for keeps.Finch wrote:Can someone lease explain how this "win the belt outright" and the "lonsdale belt" business work please ?
I also believe that it is four British title contest victories that a fighter needs to win the belt outright, rather than winning the title and making three defences. So, a fighter could lose the title but by winning the belt back that would count as a defence.
Re: Brook vs Elwell RBR
What about the rest of the bill? A good chance to see some up and coming prospects? Or piss-poor fare?! You decide

That is out of order.
I linked to his record for this reason. Check out his opponents- a debut against Peter Buckley, followed by guys like Ernie Smith, Brain Coleman, Geraint Harvey, Duncan Cottier. Look at their records- regular losers, journeymen, tomato cans- I stand by that. Edit- the exception is Karl David (who put Brook down.) For sure, I'm not saying that this only applies to Brook -Michael Jennings (for example) boxed a similar quality of opposition for his first 20 or so fights.
He is clearly a very talented and able boxer, I'm not disputing that. But guys like Stuart Elwell he perhaps should have been fighting before he became British champ, not as a voluntary defence of the British Title.

Re: Brook vs Elwell RBR
I had my reservations about Brook Vs Elwell being a competitive and viable title fight when this fight was made. But what did my head in most was that this was the main fight on a bill - that shouldn't be allowed, especially if it's going to be on Friday Fight Night.
Re: Brook vs Elwell RBR
wasn't the mcintyre fight a mandatory??
the eliminators that were ordered seem to have gone out the window
i'd doubt anyone on here hasn't been impressed with what he's produced in the title fights
how about a fight with jamie cox in the future

I'm not knocking Kell Brook, he fights the guy in front of him, but this was a limited main event.

Whicker,
Let's agree to disagree.
You have shown a lack of respect for those fighters.
I'd love to stand you in front of them and let them have a right of reply.
The issue of the main event is valid - but again that's not the FIGHTER'S issue it's he PROMOTOR'S issue.
Finally at the risk of getting boring, run through the rankings and cross out those unable to take the fight.
Then cross out those who didn't want the fight.
Then cross those out who allegedly want the fight - but price themselves off the face of the earth.
What are you left with ?
The board can sort this out now by getting the mandatory right.

Re: Brook vs Elwell RBR
The onus is on Mr Smith to ensure mandatory defences are reflective of the standard available to them. One of the promises he made was to ensure British title fights are more competitive. Hopefully he'll do that with the next fight. Has to be Watson, provided he wins.

Cheers, just watched that. First time I've seen him fight, looked very easy. Look forward to seeing him again.Asterix wrote:Here's the fight: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5LAtqulhIw
First I heard of him was from coming on here, is he well known throughout the UK or just amongst 'boxing' circles?
He does have a funny voice too

Whicker,
The post was for horse shit.

Re: Brook vs Elwell RBR
Kell is quality fighter possibly good go to world level. He would beat all a domestic level, he should fight Lomax or Hatton next then go for Euro. I can see him fighting again in April.
Re: Brook vs Elwell RBR
Can't get an opponent without a title.
Can't get an opponent with a title.
Catch-22 or a load of bollocks?
Surely Hall of Famer FW can do something about the problem.

Re: Brook vs Elwell RBR
Right, it's a fact that the following fighters have pulled out of matches with Kell Brook:
Gary Young - injury
John O'Donnell - vacated English title rather than fight Kell
Mark Thompson - withdrawn by Steve Wood as 'not ready' for fight but boxed, from memory, within about a week of the day he was supposed to box Kell
Tony Doherty - cried off twice, both due to 'injury', the second injury being the highly dubious cut thumb received when taking a VHS out the machine
Right now, the guys who should be calling him out and challenging are all queing up for the flippin' Commonwealth - Watson, Thompson and O'Donnell!
Also, Kevin McIntyre pulled out against him and, of course, ended up getting stripped by the board
Mark Lloyd accepted the match as a voluntary defence but the board vetoed it.
He'll do one more defence and then go after the European. Might take a bit of a break tho.
Kell would love to face Hatton but that won't happen - i wouldn't have thought - due to the obvious promotional issues. Kell would smash the one-paced plodder inside three, in my humble opinion.
I think Lomax might be a good bet for next time out and i think he could potentially take Kell past halfway.
The only welter in Britain - in my view - who could have a chance of beating Kell would be Jennings, but even then i would tip kell to stop him ... after Cotto has had his way with jennings i wouldn't be surprised to see him meet Kell at that point as a stepping-stone match onto the european / world stage

Re: Brook vs Elwell RBR
Lots of questions to be asked about Brook before we call him the next big thing, his potential though is fantastic. McIntyre and Elwell have been hurt in the past and he hasn't faced any of the big punchers at domestic level.
I wouldn't mind seeing Anderson vs Brook. I think Brook will be too quick, too much - but Anderson has a good chin and decent power. Could answer questions.

Re: Brook vs Elwell RBR
Good point on Anderson, someone with a hard head who will keep on coming at him. How good is Brook after 4 or 5 rds? I would love to find out.
Plenty of guys in Britain whom Brook can develop his skills against. Surely now he's British champ more ppl will fancy it? I understand a lot of guys pulled out or took a different path (away from Brook) but maybe there is a better chance of making these fights presently?
Jennings does look like the best bout out there but he could be badly beaten up by Cotto soon. Would that make the bout more, or less, likely - I'm not sure.
