I like Degale.

Nowt wrong with the lad - and I for one hope he succeeds.

As for the cockiness etc etc - reminds a tadge of Froch and the way he acts sometimes - nothing at all wrong with it.

I will repeat - I hope he succeeds!!!

what other boxer hands out business cards??? not even amir khan did that and he had way more media attention after his olympic win.
Khan didn't win the Olympics; he bagged a silver.

Chris Eubank's assessment of Degale on Bunce's Boxing Hour may have struck many (myself included) as a little harsh but perhaps time will only prove him right. It must be harder to be hungry when your pocket's are being so handsomely, an accusation often levelled at Fraudley and Khan.

IMHO, too many of the "big-name" amateurs in the UK have turned pro lately, especially with the next games being held on home turf and the risk of complete media saturation now they've all switched in such a short space of time. How many of these Olympians do we want to see on terrestrial TV beating up journeymen half their size over the next 18 months?

It is statistically unlikely that they will all make professional world champions and I think the reason that the British public have not embraced Khan and Fraudley as much as they might is the fact that we were treated to too many mediocre fights and too much expectation that Olympic success would equate to professional success which simply ain't the case.

Rant over. I wish Degale (and his former stable mates) every success but I stand by what I've said!

Well he did bag the gold which other highly funded amatuers failed to do.

Even though It doesn't mean he will have much pro sucess.

Most people here who are complaining about his mouth embrace Froch's still though.

Leave the poor sod alone. He hasn`t thown a punch as a pro yet, but people are laying into him as though he was a Nazi spy.

I don` t think he will go too far as a pro to be honest, but I will at least give him a fair crack of the whip before judging him. He won an Olypic Gold for Britain, which he/we can be proud of. Let him have his 15 minutes for Christ sake..

Just a little question, of all the olympic medallists from the last 6 games who have turned pro, how many have them have gone on to win a world title?

I can think of,

Oscar De La Hoya
Lennox Lewis
Roy Jones Jr
Richie Woodhall
Robin Reid
David Reid
Floyd Mayweather Jr
Jermain Taylor
Joel Casamayor
Wayne McCullough

off the top of my head anyway.

Vassily Jirov
Antonio Tarver
Julio Pablo Chacon
Tim Austin
Chris Byrd
Michael Carbajal
Kennedy McKinney
Jorge Julio Rocha
Henry Maske
Ray Mercer
Riddick Bowe

and the most obvious one.... Wladimir Klitschko

This is out of context.

Whitaker had beaten the Cuban that beat him (Angel Hererra) in the world championships in the prior to the Olympics. Whitaker was the world champion going into the Olympics.

The talent gap between the leonards, whitakers and degales is clear to see anyway. Degale boxes like an eastern bloc stiff.

On topic, I think Degale and all the other copycat arrogant Brits are idiots. They miss the point about arrogance and flashiness because it's all phony. They believe they HAVE to do it to sell tickets.
Eraserhead wrote: Also, Roy Jones and Floyd Mayweather were never cocky/arrogant from the start - at least not on TV anyway. They got that way after winning multiple world titles in multiple weight divisions as a legendary pros.
This quotation is bang on. Probably none of the current crop of cocky guys have the brains or historical knowledge to know this is the case though, and think the Mayweather of 2007 was like that from day dot.

Completely untrue. Herrera won gold at 1982 world champs, beating Whitaker in final. Whitaker beat Herera on points at Pan-American Games.
DeGale doesn't box like an Eastern Bloc fighter at all, what a load of crap. He was probably the slickest mover in the British team.
Have you ever seen him box?

I've never understood this "support them because they are British" lark.

Boxing is an individual sport, they don't represent their countries as professionals like in the amateurs.

I couldn't give a monkeys where a fighter comes from, if I like them then I support them, if I don't then I don't support them.

But you contribute to a forum called British boxing! One would think you would then want British boxing to succeed and wouldn't be so narrow-minded to think that this can be done without boxers with name recognition who can gain appeal outside a narrow boxing fan base.
Where would boxing be in this country now without Calzaghe, Hatton, Haye and Khan, yet half the people on here seem to want to see these guys get beaten, or just badmouth them.
Yet a guy like DeGale goes to the Olympics and wins gold in front of millions on BBC and that inspires hundreds and hundreds of kids to take up the sport, it means boxing is held up by the Government as a good thing, rather than listening to the BMA, who want it banned.
Boxing is healthier when it is done in front of thousands, rather then 20 mates from the pub. And this is where Warren doesn't get enough credit. Why does he succeed more than others? Some might feel he is bad for the sport, some are just jealous of his success. But no one can deny how hard he works.
DeGale has done his due by British boxing and I want him to succeed and I have a low opinion of anyone who slags him off before he has even stepped into a professional ring.

I can see both sides to the argument. I support British boxers more than I would any other boxers, but if I don't like them I'm not going to support them. I don't know if James Degale is an idiot or not, so I give him the benefit of the doubt.

With regards to James Degale inspiring kids to take up boxing, does modern amateur boxing actually do that? To me it seems very uninspiring. I would think our popular pros have much, much more of an impact in getting people boxing than our amateur boxers winning medals at the Olympics. Thoughts?

The biggest rises in kids taking up boxing came after Audley Harrison won gold and Amir Khan won silver. These also led to a huge rise in lottery money coming into the sport, which not only supported a national team set-up but which, for the first time, trickled down to the grass roots.

The Olympics inspires like no other sporting event. Their favourite fighters might be pros, but seeing boxing in the Olympics shows more clearly the route from the amateurs and is a much more attainable goal to a young kid.

I should amend my statement. I meant in the last Olympics, not the preceding ones.

he makes his own slagging off by acting the way he does hes a tit pure and simple british boxers act like prfessionals look at hatton an ambassador of the sport hate saying it but even amir khan acts like a true pro but degale thinks and acts like a tit imo ide be alot happier if he won that medal for iraq and represent them then say hes british because lots of british fans think he is a complete and utter bellend and he can imo shove that medal were the sun dont shine the cocky arragent scumbag.
